Financial Aid & Scholarships
Financial aid includes any money you receive to fund your education and may include: scholarships, grants, work study, loans, and more.
When you submit the
FAFSA
(commonly referred to as Financial Aid), you are automatically considered for
grants
(which do
not
need to be paid back) and
loans
(which
do
need to be paid back), so you do not need to apply for them separately. You may also apply for scholarships in addition to your financial aid or for only scholarships.

Step 1: Submit the FAFSA
Determine your eligibility to complete the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Undocumented students should complete a
Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TAFSA)
. Application availability and priority deadlines mimic the FAFSA.
Create an FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID)
, if needed. The FSA ID will serve as an electronic signature on your FAFSA.

2025-2026 FAFSA/TASFA has a priority deadline of February 15, 2025
Student and parent 2023 tax information is used on the application
Review your FAFSA Submission Summary for any discrepancies and/or important messages about your aid eligibility. The FAFSA Submission Summary summarizes the information you reported on your FAFSA. It includes your estimated eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant and federal student loans, your Student Aid Index (SAI) and whether you’ve been selected for verification. You should review your FAFSA Submission Summary for any errors you may have made on the FAFSA and review the messages provided about your aid eligibility.
Your FAFSA information will be received by TWU after it is processed by the federal processor.

Your dependency status determines whose information you must report on the FAFSA.
How to determine your dependency status
Monitor your To-Do list within the TWU Pioneer Portal for confirmation of TWU’s receipt of your FAFSA and requests for additional documents to complete your financial aid file
Check your TWU email regularly for important information about your financial aid

Step 2: Apply for Scholarships
Create a TWU Pioneer Portal Account
Apply for scholarships on the
TWU Pioneer Scholarship System
Complete the General Application and Recommended Opportunities
Note: Scholarship recipients will be notified through their
TWU email of the award.
Step 3: Accept or Reject Your Financial Aid Awards
Once your FAFSA has been received and all requirements have been met, watch for your official financial aid notification. Financial aid awards are based on your Student Aid Index (SAI), grade level, enrollment status and other factors.
Access your financial aid awards through the
TWU Pioneer Portal
Accept or reject each of your financial aid award offers
If you accept student loans, complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling and sign a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note
Review and sign your Financial Aid Offer Letter
Note: During the fall and spring semesters, financial aid will usually disburse to student accounts on the first day of class.

File a FAFSA and complete the TWU Scholarship application each year
Monitor important dates and deadlines
Check your Federal Direct Loan borrowing and Federal Pell Grant usage on the
National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)
