Service and Sustainability
Burke’s is committed to empowering girls to be agents of positive change in their school, the community, and the world.
Students are engaged in environmental education, sustainability, and stewardship activities over their nine years both in the classroom and in the community.
Our service-learning curriculum is rooted in a social justice framework, meaning students are guided to consider aspects of identity, diversity, justice, and action while engaging in meaningful service that responds to community-identified priorities, expectations, and needs.

Service Learning
Community engagement and service activities range from direct service, such as native plant conservation and food distribution; indirect service, such as toiletry drives and community asset mapping; and advocacy through letter-writing and campus-based awareness campaigns.
Sustainability Education
With a campus that sits on 3.5 acres of open space adjacent to National Parks Conservancy land, our physical setting provides an unmatched opportunity for outdoor learning and deeper connections with nature. Classrooms imbued with natural light and sustainable practices integrated into the daily routines of the school reflect our ongoing commitment to a greener Burke's.
Community Partnerships
Our goal is to encourage our students to think beyond themselves and our campus; give them a developmentally appropriate understanding of community responsibility; and enable them to see themselves as agents of positive change in the world.
The Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging works closely with Burke’s Community Connections (BCC), a parent- and school-supported committee dedicated to inspiring students and families to adopt a tradition of community engagement.
The BCC has partnered this year with the Richmond Neighborhood Center, Surfrider Foundation, Compass Family Services, and Hamilton Families. Opportunities include:
Food pantry work days for each grade at the Richmond Neighborhood Center
Education and reflection relating to community engagement
Grocery delivery to homebound seniors and individuals with mobility issues
Beach cleanups
Food drives and other seasonal drives
