Navigator PREP and our on-campus summer programs work together to build critical college readiness skills and provide the hands-on application needed to internalize them. Your dedicated Transition Counselor works with your family in May to identify the key opportunities and challenges facing your transition to college, then they use that knowledge to develop a personalized strategy for success. This will help you make the most of your time on campus, focus on specific skill areas, and foster awareness.
The combination of personalized virtual counseling with fun and interactive on-campus immersion will hone and reinforce your college readiness skills — and keep them active all summer long. The months after your on-campus experience will allow the Center for College Readiness to accumulate feedback from your summer instructors and staff, assess and leverage your growth while on campus, and maintain and enhance those skills leading up to your arrival to college in the fall.
Depending on a student’s unique needs, Navigator PREP helps develop skills in executive functioning areas of time management, planning and prioritizing assignments, as well as social integration and emotional regulation. Students learn key college independent living expectations related to hygiene and cleaning routines, financial management, and managing their own calendar. Our summer programs build these skills with hands-on independent living courses and personal immersion.
Beacon’s Center for College Readiness focuses on the family experience throughout the transition to college and supporting the family through the normative experience of separation and communication changes. Navigator PREP eases this transition through individual student and parent/family counseling sessions, preparation for communication policies in college, and more.
During the on-campus portion of your summer preparation, participate in hands-on courses and independent living labs that build:
Executive functioning
Critical thinking, reading, writing
Social integration and emotional well-being
Each course includes
experiential learning activities
to help students build confidence and concrete strategies in these vital skills.
Students develop their social and emotional skills through individual counseling, online social activities, and the immersive on-campus experience. Students learn to balance academics and self-care with social opportunities, and develop problem-solving skills for roommate, groupmate and other social conflict.
Navigator PREP and summer immersion work together to build students’ self-confidence and awareness in preparation for college life.
