Our Commitment to Diversity
The Hampshire College admissions staff is committed to creating a safe, supportive, and diverse academic community.
We demonstrate this through:
Active recruitment of talented students from underrepresented communities, especially underrepresented racial and ethnic groups
The James Baldwin Scholars Program
, which provides a full scholarship to talented students from underserved communities who would benefit from a transition year before college in which to improve general academic skills and prepare for the rigor of college studies
Partnerships with student groups, offices, and Hampshire's
Lebrón-Wiggins-Pran Cultural Center
A team of multicultural recruitment ambassadors who connect the work of admissions to the campus community
Ongoing dialogue sessions with the campus community on the intersections of race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender identity, and student life
Participation in campus-wide diversity initiatives and workshops that increase staff and faculty competence in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism
Active membership and participation in Hampshire's diversity task force
Partnerships with local and national community organizations
Diversity Factors and Selection
The admissions committee seeks to create a diverse incoming class of students each year. Hampshire's selection process is highly individualized and evaluates applicants in the context of their families, communities, and educational opportunities. Ultimately, the admissions committee is charged with determining whether a candidate is likely to be successful in Hampshire's rigorous and distinctive academic program.
