Steers Center
Coming Together to Learn, Serve, and Enjoy
The stunning 22,000-square-foot Steers Center embodies the School’s core mission of developing well-rounded students who are critical thinkers and ethical leaders. This unique blend of carefully planned spaces not only supports your intellectual and social development, but inspires your growth as an individual.
Inside the Steers Center, you will find our Innovation & Design and Digital Media Labs, where you can develop your critical analysis, design-thinking, and digital competencies—skills essential to you in college and beyond. The Steers Center is also home to our D’Amour Center for Faith, Service & Justice, the central hub for community service, social justice advocacy, student retreats, and leadership programming. Finally, the facility has a vibrant and welcoming student center—the Ragland Commons—and café where you can relax and spend time with your friends. Our entire community often gathers together there for special events.
Innovation Lab
Engineering Fundamentals
This hands-on, experiential class lets you get your hands dirty deconstructing, constructing, and repurposing materials in the pursuit of developing problem-solving skills in an engaging, non-traditional format.
This course encourages you to pursue engineering questions and technological solutions that emphasize research and problem solving using mathematical and scientific concepts. You will learn how to conceptualize a problem, develop solutions, and design and build prototypes or models.
The Robotics Team also meets regularly in this space.
Digital Photography
Digital Art and Design
Digital Media & Videography
You will produce a portfolio of finished works while responding to the guiding question: How does perspective impact an image’s message? As you take photographs from extreme points of view, you will focus on composition and the basic elements of design: line, value, shape, form, color, and texture.
This course offers the foundational concepts of digital-art making based in Adobe Photoshop. You will design digital drawing and painting-based projects while navigating and organizing the Photoshop UI. Prior knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is not required.
This deep dive into video production and digital media challenges you to create multiple short films exploring a variety of genres, including music video, narrative, mini-documentary, and experimental. Working in groups, you will master all aspects of production and learn how to promote and distribute your work.
D'Amour Center for Faith, Service & Justice
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Explore social justice issues and the foundational principles of Catholic social teaching as you engage in an ongoing community service project. Along the way, you will learn about the organizations and communities you serve, the challenges they face, and issues of social justice on a local, national, and global level.
SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
Readings from scripture, literature, modern theologians, and spiritual heroes will guide you through an exploration of the theme of life as a journey toward reality, universal truth, and ultimately God and spirituality.
Ragland Commons
This spacious, lively student center is a hub of activity for campus events, guest speakers, and special dinners, or simply for students to relax and have fun together. In addition to generous table seating and couches in the open floor plan, the space features foosball and pool tables, a riser for performances and presentations, a large-screen TV, an adjacent café, and fire pits just outside on the patio. The area is named to reflect the generosity and devotion of Canterbury Board President Nick Ragland ’88, P ’21 and Joelle Ragland P ’21.
Commons Café
Located just off the Ragland Commons, the Café is a must-stop in the Steers Center for hungry and thirsty students—or anyone else on campus, for that matter! it is ideal for a quick snack, sweet treat (mmm, warm cookies!), smoothie, cool drink, or cup of coffee to get you through the day. You can also get burgers, poke bowls, breakfast burritos, and the ever-popular bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. The Café is open Monday–Saturday from 9:30–11:30 AM and 1:30–5:30 PM; and Sunday from 1:30–5:00 PM.
