GMercyU Celebrates Public Health Week
April 13, 2026
Faculty, staff, and students attended the Public Health fair.
In honor of National Public Health Week, GMercyU’s
Public Health program
organized events on campus each day last week.
From a workshop on domestic violence sponsored by the Title IX office and the Women’s Center of Montgomery County to a pop-up table on mental health (hosted by PUB 495 students) to a “period pit stop” with free period products, the goal was to boost awareness of ways to improve community health and reinforce the power of prevention.
Students in the PUB 420 class hosted a screening of the film,
Four Good Days
, about a young woman living with opioid addiction looking to her mother for support during four difficult days of recovery and the challenges they faced rebuilding their relationship. Afterward, students led a discussion with the audience on substance use and addiction in young adults and how its consequences can affect families.
The Student Health and Wellness Center hosted a large Public Health Fair. Students in our PUB 420 class provided information on nutrition and meals that could be made with foods commonly found in Catherine’s Cupboard. Many departments from GMercyU also participated in the fair, such as the Office for Student Engagement, Title IX, Library, The Mercy Center, NUR 4001 students, SNAP, and the Exercise Science program. Area organizations, such as the Laurel House, Beds for Kids, and Morgan’s Light also shared resources.
At the fair, students, faculty, and staff were treated to free takeaways, such as mini grow-your-own lavender plants and healthy snacks.
"The American Public Health Association (APHA) National Public Health Week theme of
Ready, Set, Action
really challenged us to provide events that not only increased awareness but also created opportunities for everyone on campus to impact the health of our campus community in different ways," said Maria Warnick PhD, CRNP FNP-BC, GMercyU's Public Health Program Director.
"The other benefit was seeing students, faculty and staff just spending time together. This is so important because feeling that you belong in a community is foundational in creating health. It was a great week."
