EHLC Workshop Report (2023)

Environmental Health Language Collaborative
Purpose
This 3-day virtual workshop raised awareness of and encouraged use of metadata, standards, and tools that researchers can use to comply with the
NIH Data Management and Sharing Policies
and promoted effective management, sharing, and reuse of environmental health sciences data.
Background
In support of NIH’s longstanding commitment to making the results of NIH-funded research available, its new policy on data management and sharing came into effect on January 25, 2023. This new policy requires that applicants submit a Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan for any NIH-funded or conducted research that will generate scientific data.
NIEHS encourages data sharing to help accelerate the identification of environmental linkages to human disease and translation of that knowledge to improve public health. To prepare the environmental health sciences research community for creation and implementation of their plans, the Environmental Health Language Collaborative (
EHLC
) was hosted this workshop.
EHLC is a community-driven initiative to improve standardization, sharing, and interoperability of environmental health sciences information. In keeping with EHLC’s mission, the workshop focused on those elements of the DMS Plan associated with data/metadata description and standards.
Workshop Objectives
By the end of the three workshop events, attendees were able to:
Articulate the parts of the DMS Plan and its importance
Appreciate how the DMS Plan can aid in their research
Understand the basics of standards in the context of data management and sharing, including the value of using community-based standards
Know of resources to aid in development and implementation of DMS Plans
