Welcome to King John’s House and Museum – A Journey Through 800 Years of History
Located in the heart of Romsey, King John’s House and Museum offers a fascinating exploration of the town’s rich heritage through three unique historic buildings. The centrepiece is King John’s House, a Grade I listed medieval building named after the infamous King John of Magna Carta fame and believed to have once formed part of Romsey Abbey. Alongside it stands Tudor Cottage, a Grade II listed timber-framed building that reflects the charm of the Tudor period. Completing the trio is 13 Church Street, a Victorian home that once belonged to the Moody family, who operated a Gunshop from the premises.
In February 2025, a major fire caused extensive damage to King John’s House and smoke damage to Tudor Cottage. We are now embarking on a significant restoration project to bring King John’s House back from the ashes.
Follow our journey as we restore and preserve this treasured piece of Romsey’s history.
