Trails and Wilderness Conditions
Trails in Yosemite may be closed when there are hidden hazards or when they are impassable due to rockfall, snow, ice, or fire. Open trails aren't necessarily free of hazards. By entering the wilderness, you assume responsibility for your safety and must use good judgment. Trails not listed below are open, but may be snowy and very difficult to find from about November through May/June (and may have other hazards).
Yosemite Valley Area
The
John Muir Trail,
between Clark Point and Panorama Trail junction (near the top of Nevada Fall), aka the "ice cut," is closed through late June for trail repairs. A detour is available via the Mist Trail.
A map of closures is available.
From June 30 through October, the
Mist Trail
from its junction with the John Muir Trail (above Vernal Fall footbridge) to the top of Vernal Fall will be open Fridays through Sundays and on holidays. It will normally also be open Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 7 am (when safe). The John Muir Trail is an alternate route to the top of Vernal Fall at other times. This detour facilitates Mist Trail repair work.
A map of closures is available.
The
Panorama Trail
will be closed in the vicinity of the John Muir Trail junction, with no access between Glacier Point and Nevada Fall, on the following dates, from 8 am to 5 pm, due to helicopter operations: April
23
, June 4, 5, and 8 (subject to change), and June 10 (subject to change).
The
Half Dome cables
are down for the season; they are usually installed the the Friday before the last Monday in May, conditions permitting. A
permit is required
to hike to the top of Half Dome when the cables are up.
Crane Flat to Tuolumne Meadows Area
No closures
Mariposa Grove
No closures
Hetch Hetchy Area
No closures
Climbing Closures
Climbing closures
are in effect on several routes each year from March 1 through July 15 to protect
peregrine falcons
and other closures may occur throughout the year. A free
wilderness climbing permit
is required for all overnight big wall climbs.
