Visual & Media Arts
At SAAS, the Visual & Media Arts offerings represent a vibrant studio culture that celebrates innovation, personal voice, and artistic rigor. Our courses invite students to explore the world through a creative lens, drawing connections between technique, self-expression, and bold experimentation. Across mediums like drawing, painting, ceramics, fiber arts & fashion design, photography, animation, and film, students build confidence in their ideas, develop technical skills, and learn how to communicate visually with clarity and power.
Whether it’s a pencil sketch or a film project, SAAS students are encouraged to take creative risks, engage in critique, and pursue meaningful, personally resonant work. For students with a deep interest in the arts, there are pathways to grow into intermediate and advanced tracks, developing skills and bodies of work that can support advanced study in high school and beyond.

Middle School
In Middle School, students take visual arts classes each year, exploring drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and 3D design. In 8th grade, students begin working with digital tools to create multimedia work and gain exposure to creative technology. Teachers emphasize process, exploration, and individual expression, which lay the groundwork for continued artistic development.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM GUIDE
Upper School
All Upper School students begin their visual arts experience in Beginning Studio Arts, a foundational course that introduces essential techniques and principles in 2D and 3D media. From there, they can choose from a number of classes, ranging from ceramics and painting to photography, film, and graphic design.
Students who want to pursue a deeper commitment can move into Intermediate and Advanced levels of Film, Photography, and Visual Arts, which require a portfolio review by instructors. These courses emphasize independent thinking, creative problem-solving, and the integration of conceptual and technical skills. All students develop portfolios, and many exhibit their work in regional or national competitions.
