Severe Weather
It is very rare that severe weather affects our ability to operate as a school. However, in extreme cases, it may be necessary to close the school to safeguard pupils and staff. In these circumstances, the school may opt to take any of the following decisions.
Close the school before pupils attend for morning registration
In the event of severe weather, we assess the conditions on the school site from 7.00am. We also liaise with transport providers to assess traffic and road conditions on routes into school, and consider the Health and Safety of pupils walking to school. We aim to make this decision as soon as possible so that parents/carers can make suitable alternative arrangements.
If the decision is made to close the school, this message is sent by text to parents/carers and published on the homepage of the school website. Please try to avoid telephoning the school to see if we are open, as the switchboard becomes inaccessible due to the sheer volume of calls.
The decision is communicated to Neath Port Talbot local authority, who will update the
relevant page
on their website. We also communicate with local radio (The Wave) who will announce the closure on air.
Delay the school’s opening until later in the morning
In some cases, it may be possible to delay the school’s opening. This isn’t always practical due to the high proportion of pupils who use school transport.
Operate the school for some year groups
If we decide that it is impossible to safeguard all pupils on site, we may decide to open for some year groups. This may be prudent when pupils in Year 10 and Year 11 are taking external examinations, for example.
Close the school during the day
We try and avoid this course of action because of the issues it creates for parents/carers to collect and supervise their children. However, if weather deteriorates severely during the day, the decision may be taken to close the school early. In most cases, this is dictated by transport providers as they would be unable to get pupils home if delayed any later. If the decision is taken to close, a text message is sent to all parents, so it is essential we have your correct mobile number stored on our systems. In emergencies, provision can be made in school to ensure pupils can stay until there is appropriate supervision at home.
