Each Thing that in Season Grows: The Japanese Garden
January 9–May 10, 2026
Atsuhiko & Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Thematic Gallery | Gallery 3
Discover the importance of gardens in Japanese culture through this exhibition of seven modern Japanese paintings—and one 16th-century Chinese work that illustrates the origins of this lush genre.
Gardens are fundamental in the expressions of Japanese culture and have been a source of artistic inspiration for centuries. In the modern period, they spurred artists to make bold innovations in color and design, evident in sumptuous paintings such as Enomoto Chikatoshi’s Garden, the centerpiece of this exhibition. Recently conserved with a generous grant from the Robert F. Lange Foundation, this painting was selected as an exemplary modern artwork by the Japanese government for its annual exhibition (
Bunten
) in 1934 and makes its public debut at HoMA in this show.
Donors have been instrumental in the development of HoMA’s extraordinary collection since its inception. In 2021, the Museum’s holdings in modern Japanese art were significantly expanded by a gift of more than 100 paintings, ceramics, and lacquerwares from Terry Welch—many of which were featured in the 2023 exhibition
Transformation: Modern Japanese Art
. Six additional paintings donated by Mr. Welch—never before publicly displayed—are featured here. The works illustrate the dynamism and diversity of the modern period, which dramatically contemporized traditional formats and subjects to reflect the new aesthetic of the rapidly changing world in the first part of the 20th century.
