About us - Long Island Jewish Medical Center | Northwell Health
About our hospital
A cornerstone of Northwell Health, Long Island Jewish Medical Center is a nonprofit teaching hospital serving the greater metropolitan New York area. We focus on the complete care of every patient, with a compassionate and collaborative approach to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Major facilities on our 48-acre campus include:
Long Island Jewish Medical Center
Cohen Children’s Medical Center
Zucker Hillside Hospital
Zuckerberg Pavilion
Katz Women’s Hospital
Our facilities for medical, surgical, dental and obstetrical care have exceptional staff using the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies available. The vast scope of our care includes world-class minimally invasive robotic surgery, thoracic care, orthopedics, head and neck oncology, urology, gynecology and vascular programs.
Long Island Jewish Medical Center has flourished since its beginnings in 1954, as we have expanded and improved to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse communities. In 2012, we completed construction on the Katz Women’s Hospital and Zuckerberg Pavilion, transforming the appearance of the now 583-bed hospital, which houses one of the state’s busiest maternity programs.
Our hospital continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of our population, yet our mission remains true to its beginnings—providing quality care for all patients regardless of income, race, religion, sexuality or creed. In fact, today our center proudly serves one of the most diverse populations in the nation.

, according to 2017 data from Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) for Queens and Long Island. We are dual-recognized as leaders in cancer care and minimally invasive robotic surgery, with the highest volume of minimally invasive procedures performed on Long Island—which means you’ll always be cared for by top experts in the field.
We are also the first in Northwell to perform the MONARCH bronchoscopy
giving us the lead in early detection
Acute Lung Injury Program
This is a joint effort among the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery; and the Northwell eICU. The program provides advanced care for the management of acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and provides the option of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The Northwell eICU is an essential component of the program, enhancing best practice for ALI/ARDS management and identifying patients who may benefit from the program at Northwell critical care units and surrounding hospitals.
Robotic Surgery Program
Our hospital offers innovative, robot-assisted technology with the Mako device, a robotic arm that is used interactively by surgeons during orthopedic joint replacement surgery (including total and partial knee replacements). This surgery’s many benefits for patients include shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, less pain and lower risk of infection.
We have five robots (four XI, one SP)
Orthopedics
We offer a
full range of services
—from diagnosis to rehabilitation—for conditions affecting the bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, including inpatient and ambulatory surgery.
We’ve been designated a Center of Excellence in advanced joint replacement for hip and knee replacement surgery as well as advanced spine surgery by the Joint Commission, and we’re proud to be
ranked among the best hospitals in the nation for orthopedic care on
U.S. News & World Report’s
2023-24 Best Hospitals rankings.
Emergency department (ED)
Our ED
sees more than 80,000 patients a year. As a designated tertiary care center, we care for the most complicated cases, as well as routine emergency and urgent care patients. With facilities that are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we offer a New York state-certified stroke center and percutaneous coronary intervention center. We also have geriatric emergency department accreditation by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
