Admissions FAQs
To be eligible for admission consideration to the Wingate University PA program enrolling fall semester 2027, each applicant must fulfill the following requirements. Please keep in mind that completing these requirements qualifies you to apply to our program and does not guarantee an interview. Unless otherwise stated below, all requirements must be fulfilled by January 15, 2027.
There are no waivers or exceptions to any of these requirements except for those published in this document. Wingate University PA program offers no advanced placement and does not accept transfer credit from any prior enrollment in any health science, medical, or related program. No advanced placement is offered for health science work or study experience. Each student accepted in the PA program at Wingate University must satisfy all requirements of the didactic and clinical years of study.
Applications are carefully reviewed by the Admission Committee utilizing a holistic approach that considers qualitative and quantitative factors to ensure that we are fulfilling the mission of the program. This multifaceted process focuses on academic credentials as well as evidence of:
leadership
a commitment to service
grit/resilience
a shared commitment to the program and its mission
unique experiences that contribute to learning
A qualified applicant who was previously enrolled in another PA program will be considered for admission only after consultation with the director of the former PA program. Qualified applicants who are graduates of Wingate University will be given preference in the admission process over other similarly qualified applicants.

Each applicant must submit an application for admission online through the
Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants
(CASPA). The admission cycle opens in April 2026.  Applications must be
verified
by CASPA by January 15, 2027, in order to be considered for fall 2027 admission. Wingate University requires no supplemental application, forms, or fees. Since Wingate’s PA Program operates on a rolling admissions basis, earlier submissions have a greater likelihood of securing one of our limited interview slots. There are two locations of the PA program: Wingate campus and Hendersonville campus. Applicants must decide which campus they want to apply to when submitting with CASPA. We cannot accept applications to both campuses.

Enrollment in a Wingate University Levine College of Health Sciences program requires current and appropriate legal immigration status with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services of the United States Department of Homeland Security. Current and appropriate legal immigration statuses include United States citizenship, United States lawful permanent residence, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and other legal immigration statuses that allow participation in lawful study at Wingate University and employment authorization in the United States. Applicants must demonstrate current and appropriate legal immigration status to Wingate University authorities.
Many programs require clinical placements at third party health care facilities as a graduation requirement.  Although Wingate University uses its best efforts to place all students in a clinical setting, Wingate University cannot guarantee that the third party health care facility will permit students without U.S. citizenship or permanent residency to complete their training at the facility.  Additionally, postgraduate employment in the United States in health sciences occupations normally requires that applicants pass national exams, obtain state licensure, and demonstrate authorization for employment in the United States. Criteria for eligibility for national exams and/or to qualify for state licensure are set by national boards and each state. It is the responsibility of each prospective Levine College of Health Sciences student to consult the requirements of national boards and the licensing authority in each state in which they plan to pursue employment to determine the qualifications for licensure and their eligibility to become licensed. National and state licensure requirements are subject to change.
When indicating language proficiency on the CASPA application, the following applicants will be required to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language iBT (TOEFL iBT):
Those who indicate a first language other than English
and
Who do not add an additional language of English at an advanced proficiency level
Only the internet-based testing is accepted and the results must be submitted through CASPA on or before Jan. 15, 2027. We require a minimum total score of 90 or greater, with a minimum score of 25 or greater in the speaking section.

An applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university located within the United States (see
Definition of Accredited Institutions
below). International degrees that have been evaluated as United States equivalent will not fulfill this requirement. An applicant who is admitted to the program with their bachelor's degree pending completion will be considered a “provisional” admission until the degree is conferred, which must be on or before June 15, 2027. If a master's degree or higher is required for admission eligibility, the admission will be considered “provisional” until the degree is conferred which must be on or before June 15, 2027.
Definition of Accredited Institutions

Definition of Accredited Institutions*
below). Each applicant must earn a C or higher in each of the nine prerequisite courses.
All nine prerequisite courses must be completed within seven years of your planned matriculation.
For the 2026-2027 application cycle, this will be in 2020 or later. Applications may be submitted with prerequisite(s) pending as long as the courses are registered for and will be completed by our deadline of January 15, 2027.  Depending on how many prerequisites are pending, and which ones they are, we may need to put the application in a pending status until the final grade(s) for the outstanding prerequisite(s) are received.
Human Anatomy and Human Physiology
(8 credit hours minimum) This requirement may be met by taking either: (a) one Human Anatomy with Lab course and one Human Physiology with Lab course;
or
(b) two Human Anatomy and Physiology with Lab courses (Human A&P I and Human A&P II).  These two tracks cannot be combined (for example, Human Anatomy cannot be paired with Anatomy and Physiology II). If labs are taken separately from lectures, two of the eight credit hours must be lab. Comparative, mammalian, or invertebrate anatomy or physiology are not accepted.
Genetics
(3 credit hours minimum, lecture only)
Microbiology with Lab
(4 credit hours minimum)
rganic Chemistry with Lab
(4 credit hours minimum)
Biochemistry
(3 credit hours minimum, lecture only; combination courses of organic/biochemistry or similar will not fulfill this prerequisite)
Each applicant must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on the six courses listed above to be eligible for admission consideration; no grade below C will be accepted regardless of the calculated GPA.
General Psychology
(3 credit hours minimum; AP and other advanced coursework taken in high school for college credit is accepted, provided that the credit is reflected on the applicant's undergraduate transcript)
Statistics
(3 credit hours minimum; AP and other advanced coursework taken in high school for college credit is accepted, provided that the credit is reflected on the applicant's undergraduate transcript)
Medical Terminology
(No minimum credit hours; can be credit hour course or continuing education course in the U.S.; documentation of successful completion, if not reflected on college or university transcript, must be submitted directly to the PA program)
Exception: If an applicant is currently, or was within five years of anticipated matriculation, the main instructor at an accredited institution (college, community college, or university, either online or traditional classroom) for any of the above courses, the requirement to retake the course is waived. Please see the below definition of accredited institutions. Documentation of the instruction must be provided to the admissions officer by the applicant’s immediate supervisor at the accredited institution. This exception does not extend to supplemental instructors, laboratory assistants, or teaching assistants. When documentation is received, a grade of A will be applied to the prerequisite along with the required credit hours and will be used to calculate the applicant’s science prerequisite GPA.

The
technical standards for admission
set forth by the PA program establish essential qualities that are considered necessary for students admitted to the program to achieve the knowledge, skills, and levels of competency stipulated for graduation by the faculty and expected of the professional program by its accrediting agency, ARC-PA. All students admitted to this program are expected to demonstrate the attributes and meet the expectations listed. These technical standards are not only required for admission but must be maintained throughout a student’s progress in the PA program. Applicants who accept an offer of admission must sign a document acknowledging their possession of these attributes and return the document to the PA program with the tuition deposit.
Each applicant must complete the
Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) within five years of anticipated enrollment in the program and have the official scores report submitted directly to CASPA through ETS. Wingate University PA Program GRE code is 7911 and is applicable to both campuses. No minimum scores are required but scores in the 50th percentile or higher on each of the three sections are considered competitive. We will not accept the MCAT as substitution for the GRE, and we will not waive the GRE if you have a graduate degree.
ETS provides a GRE Fee Reduction Program for individuals who can demonstrate financial need, for those who are unemployed and receiving unemployment compensation, and for national programs that work with underrepresented groups. Test-takers can complete the GRE Fee Reduction Request form (PDF) and follow the instructions on the form regarding the submission of materials to ETS. Voucher numbers are sent to recipients via email within 2 weeks of ETS approval of the request. More information about the GRE Fee Reduction Program, including who is eligible and how to apply is
available here
One from a provider and one from a college professor or academic advisor.
A minimum of two letters of recommendation are required when the application is submitted through CASPA. One of these must be from a health care provider (MD, DO, PA, or NP), and the other from a college professor (who taught a course you completed) or your academic advisor. We prefer to see a minimum of three letters, and strongly advise varying the "venue" of your reference writers.
It is strongly recommended that each of your reference writers has known you at the very least one year.
Each applicant must complete a minimum of 500 hours of direct patient contact. “Shadowing” hours and hours accrued for academic credit do not count toward these required hours.

The interview consists of:
A one-to-one interview with a faculty member
Sitting in on a class
A Q&A session with current PA students
Multi Mini Interviews (MMIs)
The admissions officer receives each applicant’s documents after CASPA completes the verification process. The admissions officer or assigned staff reviews each application to determine whether an applicant is eligible for admission consideration. Following this initial review, each applicant receives an email from the admissions officer or assigned staff detailing the status of the application. The admissions officer or assigned staff may schedule an interview with the applicant. Admission interviews are held from September through February and are conducted within a 2-3 hour time frame. Following the interview session, the admissions officer or designated staff will contact each applicant by email within three weeks concerning the applicant’s status with the program. Admission with pending requirements will be considered “provisional” until the requirements are fulfilled on or before the stated deadlines.
Admission to the Wingate University PA Program is competitive. The following information describing recent cohorts will allow prospective applicants to realistically assess their chances of admission, and to plan accordingly. Although this represents the average qualifications among accepted candidates, each application is evaluated on its individual merits.

Applicants offered admission to the PA program will be notified by the admissions officer or designated staff by email. In order to confirm acceptance of the offer, each applicant must pay a $1,500 deposit. The $1,500 deposit will be applied to the fall semester tuition if the student enrolls in the program. Failure to pay the $1,500 deposit in a timely matter will forfeit the applicant’s place in the program. The $1,500 tuition deposit is nonrefundable if the applicant chooses not to enroll in the PA program, fails to fulfill any requirement pending at the time of provisional admission, or is dismissed by the PA program prior to enrollment for reasons including, but not limited to, failure to disclose, or concealment of, a felony conviction, illegal drug use, and/or positive drug screening, or otherwise a materially false application statement.

Immunization requirements are reviewed annually to be consistent with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control as well as the general requirements of clinical affiliates.  Immunizations at student expense are required prior to matriculation for PA students.  Documentation should be submitted to Student Health Service.
DTP or Td (3 doses – month, day, year of each dose)
Td or Tdap or Tdap booster (within last 10 years – month, day, year)
Polio (3 doses – month, day, year of each dose)
MMR (after age 1, 2 doses – month, day, year of each dose) OR
Measles (2 doses – month, day, year of each dose or titer date and result)
Mumps (2 doses – month, day, year of each dose or titer date and result)
Rubella (1 dose – month, day, year or titer date and result)
Hepatitis B series (3 doses – month, day, year of each or titer date and result)
Varicella (chicken pox) (2 doses – month, day, year of each or titer date and result)
** An updated meningococcal vaccine series is recommended based on the updated 2023 CDC guidelines for healthcare workers at increased risk.
Additionally, a Tuberculin test (PPD) (within 12 months, mm induration and date read)
2-step required within 12 months of starting the clinical phase
Chest x-ray if positive PPD (date and results)
Treatment for latent TB, if applicable (date)
* TB testing are required annually. Only laboratory proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, or varicella is acceptable if the vaccine is not taken.  Statement of disease is not sufficient for immunization record purposes.
*Influenza Vaccination – Although the influenza vaccine is not required for matriculation into the program, the program strongly encourages vaccination in the fall of years one, two, and three of the program. Should a student decline the influenza vaccine, clinical placement in years two and three may be limited due to clinical affiliate’s influenza vaccine requirements. The Wingate PA Program cannot guarantee clinical placements for unvaccinated students which may limit the student’s ability to complete and graduate from the program. The completion of all clinical rotations is required for completion of the program.
*COVID-19 Vaccination- Wingate University does not currently require that students receive the COVID-19 vaccination. In the recent past, clinical sites required that students show proof of vaccination before being allowed to care for patients at their site, with few opportunities for exemption. The majority of these requirements have recently ended, but vaccine requirements may change during your time in the program. Given this, the program encourages students to receive their COVID-19 vaccination in preparation for the clinical year to limit the potential impact on their timely progression and completion of the program.

The Wingate University Physician Assistant Studies program uses
Central Application Service for Physician Assistants
(CASPA) as our admissions application for the programs in Wingate and Hendersonville, NC. Applicants are asked to choose either the Wingate or Hendersonville Campus in order to submit a CASPA application. There is no supplemental application for this program.
Two Campuses...One Program
The Wingate University Physician Assistant Studies Program admits one class each year, up to sixty students, beginning in late August. Forty students are admitted to the Wingate campus and twenty to the Hendersonville campus. Through advanced technology, we offer synchronous distance learning, wherein faculty interact in real time with students, regardless of which Wingate University location they’re attending. Every student can engage with other students at both locations during class. Only the hands-on lab courses are taught separately on each campus.
The Wingate campus is located just 30 minutes outside of Charlotte, nestled on 540 rolling acres. Impressive facilities on campus and unmatched opportunities as Wingate is positioned in the heart of North Carolina's healthcare providers. The Hendersonville campus offers an educational experience in the mountains of western North Carolina with all of its natural beauty and diversity. Opportunities are offered in this area to work in a variety of environments, including under-served populations as well as distinguished healthcare providers in state-of-the-art facilities.

Scholastic Resources:
Students on both campuses have access to all of the same scholastic resources to include Dynamed Plus and Access Medicine through the library website. Librarian services and research tools are similarly available online.
Student Health Services:
The Wingate campus houses the Student Health Center which is available equally to undergraduate and graduate students on location.  Students on the Hendersonville campus have access to multiple urgent care, primary care, and hospital services in the local area. Certain vaccines, such as the annual influenza vaccine, may be made available on campus. Availability is determined on a year-to-year basis.
Fitness Center:
Tuition includes fitness center access: Wingate Campus employees and students can use the McGee Athletic Center. Students, staff, and faculty on the Hendersonville campus are provided with a complimentary membership to western North Carolina YMCA facilities.  The Hendersonville YMCA is located across the street from campus. Students may attend any western NC YMCA after registering for their membership.
Bon Appetit (Cafeteria):
Cafeteria services and various small dining establishments are available to students on the Wingate campus.  Hendersonville students enjoy breakfast, lunch, and grab-and-go snacks from the Overlook Cafe, which is located on campus.  The cafe offers a wide range of menu options at reasonable prices. It is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m.  The town of Hendersonville also boasts many small eateries and restaurants that deliver.
