Partner Universities – Bath Spa University
Partner Directory
Become globally connected. We've partnered with over 40 universities and institutions around the world.
As a second year undergraduate student, you'll have the opportunity to study at one of our partners through our
Semester Abroad
programme.
Your chosen university
must
offer your subject area, so we encourage you to conduct your own research into the universities you are interested in applying to.
Unless otherwise specified, the taught language at all of our partner universities is English. It is up to the student to be aware of any language requirements.
All courses at our partner universities have been reviewed by
Go Global
and BSU’s academic team. However, modules are subject to change based on availability.
Students in certain subject areas are ineligible for a semester abroad (in either semester) due to their accreditation requirements. It is important that students taking an accredited degree be aware and discuss with their Course Leader or Academic Adviser to ensure they are eligible.
Some subjects can only allow a Semester Abroad in a certain semester. Please speak with your Course Leader to ask which semester is best for your course.
All students are required to inform their Course Leader of their semester abroad plans.
Take a look at our Go Global Semester Abroad brochure to search for a destination by course and for further information on the Semester Abroad programme.
The below Partner Directory lists all of our partners, but not all will apply to your course. All costs are approximate.

What do BSU students say?
“For a whole variety of reasons, the time I spent in Austria at the Kunstuniversistat Linz has proved to be a game-changer for me, and I believe it will have a lasting effect on the way I approach both my creative output and life in general.
“The students I studied and lived with were also very open and enthusiastic, which made me feel at ease from the start. This gave me much needed confidence to do the simple (but important) things that just living in an unfamiliar place challenge you to do: like getting on the right tram that takes you to meet your friends at a cinema; like going into a shop and coming out with exactly what you intended to buy; like finding your way round a supermarket; like ordering a meal without making the waiter raise his eyebrows.”

“I found my time in Canada to be challenging but am incredibly proud of myself and am immensely glad that I decided to do a semester abroad! I loved being able to expand my knowledge and areas of interest by taking modules that are not available at Bath Spa and it has given me more inspiration for my future plans. I felt a lot more independent being in a different country and feel like my confidence has grown as well as my ability to take things in stride.
"I liked how diverse the culture was in Montreal, Old Montreal being about a 10 minute walk from where I was staying. If you are a fan of cities then I would 100% recommend Montreal to study abroad in, just maybe touch up on a little French before you go!”

“I’ve always wanted to experience living in a different country that was outside of the norm. This is why I chose Mexico. The people were very nice and friendly as well. I was able to have conversations and interact with people more comfortably over there, and even though the national language is Spanish, a lot of people there knew English. Other students there were enrolled in the exchange programme, and they were from all over the world. I met people from countries I never thought I would meet, and some of those people I still speak to today.”

What do BSU students say?
“It was quite literally the best six months ever, and I wish I could do it again. I made close friends who I know I will keep in touch with for many years, from all around the world! I got the opportunity to go on so many adventures, cabin trips, camping trips, swims, hikes, skiing and so much more– memories that I’ll keep forever!
"The actual university in Volda is so advanced, and I learnt so many new skills that now supplement my learning back at BSU (almost like a little bonus!)– for example, we got to use their new 360-degree filming equipment while skiing which was lots of fun.
"In terms of finance, I was surprised to find that my rent in Norway was very cheap (around £300), which was a massive difference to what I was paying in Bath! Although food is expensive, I still think I saved money being in Norway vs Bath, a win win!”

“One of the best parts was meeting other international students from all across the world, and being able to learn about their backgrounds and their culture.
"I was able to explore many different places, as Tarragona is within train distance of so many other Spanish cities, all with their own cultures and highlights. On the first day, the University provided us with a ‘passport’, which contained information of places, food, sights, etc that we should see whilst being in Tarragona.”

What do BSU students say?
“Studying abroad was one of the highlights of my time at Bath Spa University. I met so many people from all over the world and enjoyed sharing new experiences with them like skiing for the first time, trying traditional Spanish foods like paella and taking part in Catalan festivals like Sant Jordi Day.”
– Cherith Wright, 2017/18
”Over time, Vic became something I never expected, it became home. But those feelings (feeling like an outsider) slowly shifted as I met the most amazing people, many of whom became like family within weeks. That intense connection, perhaps fuelled by the short amount of time we had together, changed everything. The discomfort turned into laughter, shared meals, deep conversations, and spontaneous adventures.”

What do BSU students say?
“Studying abroad is like a sudden transition to adulthood where responsibilities come along with newfound freedom… I recommend visiting Langholmen Island, located at the centre of Stockholm. It's not a well-known tourist spot, making it a peaceful place to spend your time. I suggest going swimming with others, even during the colder seasons (just make sure to find a spot with a sauna). Afterwards, head over to Stora Hendrik Café and enjoy some of their delicious waffles.”

It is usual in American universities to share bedrooms with one or two other students. There are limited self-catering facilities in American accommodation. American universities make use of 'meal plans' which students can normally purchase to be entitled to 3 meals a day in the food halls.
Students planning to attend American universities in Semester 1 need to be aware of the visa regulations and costs involved to obtain a visa, much of which may be required at the time of application for exchange. Students also need to be aware of the changing visa regulations, including the standard social media checks that occur during visa processing.

What do BSU students say?
“I mainly chose Columbia because the module choices for English were so unusual and interesting. I was particularly excited about the native American and Twentieth century American authors modules.
"My cultural theories module was so helpful regarding the rest of my degree as we would learn about theories and philosophies in a great amount of detail. When I returned to Bath Spa for my third year this knowledge really helped me to add critical engagement to my essays.
"In networking through the course, I have become much more confident in talking to new people and presenting myself.”

What do BSU students say?
“Something that will forever stay with me from my semester in Montana is the absolutely stunning natural beauty that surrounded me. Those majestic Rocky Mountains, the crystal-clear lakes, and those vast open spaces - they etched an indelible mark on my heart. Hiking to hidden waterfalls, spotting wildlife in their natural habitats, and stargazing beneath the expansive Montana sky - these are memories I'll treasure forever.
"When it comes to blending in and feeling like a local in Montana, I'd say your best bet is the local coffee shop or diner. Montanans are known for their warm hospitality, and these spots often serve as community hubs where you can strike up conversations with friendly locals. ... you'll find that Montanans are eager to share their stories and make you feel like you're part of their close-knit community.”

“Attending the variety of different lectures and having the opportunity to live abroad have shown me how important it is to stay connected with what is going on in the world.
"Meeting new people from all over the world, becoming friends with them and learning about their culture is at the centre of global citizenship. From there I feel you can become a more accepting person, trying to understand different viewpoints and cultural ways of life.”
