Lady Frances Balfour (1858-1931), sister of the Duke of Argyll. She loved Tiree and spent many happy years at The Lodge.
An Iodhlann’s volunteers and staff periodically embark upon projects that investigate specific topics of Tiree’s history and culture. These range from
archaeological digs
, through recording stories and songs from the mouths of the island’s people, to new ways of improving access to the archives. The projects often involve the expertise of individuals and organisations from beyond Tiree, benefiting the community by bringing new skills to the island and by spreading knowledge of Tiree beyond its shores. Projects include working with
Inveraray Castle archives
, grave mapping at
Soroby and Kirkapol Cemeteries
, recording
Tiree place-names
, developing a mobile phone app and writing a paper on
Tiree’s unique marble
