“Act, move, believe, strive, hope, cry out to (God) with all your heart.”
Prologue to the Counsels
Pray
In the introduction to her Counsels, St. Angela addresses the local leaders of her Company. She first asks them to pray for guidance so that they may be faithful to their responsibilities and do what it is they need to do out of love.
Respect
St. Angela then tells them that respect is the primary value to exhibit to each person they meet, for “true love acts in this way.” The tasks they are about should not be a burden, but looked upon as a gift from God for having chosen them to guard such a treasure.
Courage
Next, St. Angela speaks of courage and reliance on God to assist them in all they have to do. Finally, she encourages them to act. The above quote is filled with powerful action words that come from the depth of her heart. Taking a “back seat” approach to life is not going to get us anywhere.
Life provides us with so many opportunities to live our faith to the fullest. Do “SOMETHING” – get moving and call upon God if you need help. As Christians, we are about hope and perseverance. We have our daily dyings and risings – our own resurrection experiences that bring us closer to understanding the Paschal Mystery of Jesus’ own dying and rising.
Do Something
All of us have had times when we went out of our way to do something for someone, and in the end, we felt good about what we did, rewarded or not, recognized or not, praised or not. We did it out of love. That’s all St. Angela is asking of us – just do something – get moving – we may be surprised at how God uses us to bring love and respect to another.

This Lent, place yourself in Mary’s position of holding her child in her arms so lovingly. Jesus and his mother surely had a bond that was special and beautiful. Allow this Lent to teach you the beauty of holding on and letting go.

When I think of something always burning, my first thoughts go to Moses and the burning bush. The bush is all-consuming, yet it is never destroyed by the burning fire. I believe this is what St. Angela is implying when it comes to charity.

January
is about the beginning of another year, resolutions, starting over, promises, new goals, new life, new hopes and dreams, a better tomorrow, deeper faith, finding God, and the list goes on.

Trusting in God and God’s providence is one of the hardest things we are asked to do. As human beings, we like to be in control of all that affects us. We think - who knows better what we need and what we want than ourselves!
