Upper School (Grades 9-12)
Protégé Program
Laurel School’s Protégé Program
creates opportunities for students in Grades 9-12 to explore career paths in which they have interest. No matter the interest, the Protégé Team individually mentors students along the Protégé Pathway, allowing them to observe individuals in their interested field, explore the various branches of specific professions, research and reflect on academic journals, documentaries and books and conclude with a presentation to the Laurel community.
The Protégé Pathway
Once accepted to the Protégé Program, students will be paired with a Protégé Mentor (member of the Protégé Team) who will guide and support them through their Pathway Requirements. The Pathway Requirements are as follows:
Inquire & Observe:
Students will connect with Protégé Sponsors (members of the local, national and global community) both in-person and remotely, to learn about the individual’s specific role and/or field of study. Students can be paired with a Protégé Sponsor in which they already know, or ask the Protégé Team to make a connection.
Explore:
Students will broaden their understanding of the field they are interested in by subscribing to a podcast series, watching documentaries or choosing to read a book that pertains to their Protégé topic. Protégé mentors and sponsors will also assist students in the selection of resources to pursue.
Research:
Students will read academic journals or news articles that discuss their possible career interest and write a summary of what they have learned. Additionally, they will write about what it takes to pursue a career in their chosen field (i.e. type of schooling required, licensures, typical work/life balance, salary averages, etc.)
Journal:
Alongside their mentor, students will keep a journal of the things they are doing. This is a great way for students to reflect on the people they have met, things they have read, conversations had, etc.
Present:
The final piece of the Protégé experience is a presentation. Students will present their Protégé journey to members of the Laurel community (Protégé Team, peers, sponsor/s, advisor, etc.).
Previous Protégé experiences have included:
US Attorney’s Office [Law]
Case Western Reserve University [Scientific Research]
The MetroHealth System [Neurologic Physical Therapy]
Luna Bakery [Baking]
The Young Team [Real Estate]
USCRI Cleveland [Immigration]
Boyd Watterson [Business and Investing]
