All American Five Radio Repair Summer Camp
Learn How to Repair the All American Five Tube AM Radio
Next Class: Monday, June 8th through Friday, June 12th, 2026
The AA5 tube radio repair summer camp has a date for 2026. This five-day course has proven to be quite popular so the MRT is going to continue as long as the interest persists.
Scope of the Course:
To teach an individual with no electronic background the basic skills to trouble shoot and repair an
All American Five
tube type radio.
The 2026 summer camp starts on Monday, June 8
th
and runs through Friday, June 12
th
.  The venue is the
useum of
adio and
echnology, 1640 Florence Ave, Huntington West Virginia 25701.  Classes are going to be four to five hours long per day, starting at 9:00am. Lunch will be from 11:30 pm to 12:30 pm then the afternoon session will start again at 12:30 pm. A typical class day will be divided into somewhat equal parts classroom instruction and hands-on lab work. The MRT will provide the tools, test equipment, and even a five-tube radio to repair and keep if you don’t have one of your own to work on. If you are planning on bringing your own radio to summer camp it must be approved by either Bob Ripley or Bill Reich prior to class start date. Either of these folks can be reached at
mratwv@gmail.com
. Your radio must be a five-tube radio with point-to-point wiring, not a printed circuit board. The radio should be the type without a power transformer, and no console radios are allowed. They are just too big for the classroom.
The cost of the course is $225.00, and it is due on Monday morning, the first day of class. The student will also need to bring a three-ring binder to hold the class handout material, a pencil, and a calculator capable of doing scientific notation (most modern cell phones have this have this capability built into them). A good reference book that we recommend but is not required for this course is “All American Five Radio” by Dick Whipple and is available to purchase on Amazon. Participants are responsible for their own lodging and meals except for Friday in which the MRT staff will be providing a pizza lunch for all attendees.
Classes are limited to six participants, and we need a minimum of three individuals to hold the class. If you are interested but have questions or if you would like to sign up contact Bob Ripley at
mratwv@gmail.com
There is a reference book for the AA5 classes.
It is
All American Five Radio from Scratch
by Dick Whipple. This book is available from Amazon for less than $18.00. Participants in the AA5 classes are not required to purchase this book to take the course but it is a great reference during and after the course is completed.
Kid’s Camp: June 22 – June 26, 2026
The Magic of Radio Waves
This year’s technology focused Kid’s Camp has a radio theme. The kids will learn about radio waves and the basics of radio technology, which is the basis for all wireless communications whether it be AM or FM radio, TV, Cell phone, or Wi-Fi.
Participants will build a Crystal AM Radio that works without any power source, but that’s only the beginning. They will learn about basic electronic components (resistors, capacitors, transistors etc..) while building a single transistor audio amplifier, “dead bug style”.
There is a project to build a morse code practice oscillator to send secret messages to each other. The history of which dates back to the mid-1840s with the birth of wired communication and eventually wireless communication.
This Kid Camp is a mixture of fun hands-on projects with discussions as to how it all works. The target age group is 12- to 16-year-olds with a limited class size of 9 individuals. The date is Monday, June 22
nd
through Friday, the 26
th
. Camp starts at 9:00am with lunch from 11:00 to 11:30am. The day ends at 2:00pm. Participants are responsible for their own lunch except for Friday which will be a pizza lunch provided by the museum. The cost is $225.00 per student. Questions can be directed to Bob Ripley at
mratwv@gmail.com
The class will be located at the museum.
