With AP exams approaching in May, students in
Eliza Beaudin’s
AP Psychology class are already preparing to give it their all. And when it comes to complex material, an expert perspective can make all the difference. On April 13,
Thomas Nailor ’08
joined the class via Zoom to share real-world insight into diagnosis, not only what it looks like in practice, but also the nuanced considerations involved in working with patients.
Thom graduated from Providence College in 2012 and earned his master’s degree from Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research in 2018. He currently serves as an outreach coordinator and psychotherapist at Saint Joseph’s University Counseling and Psychological Services. During his visit, Thom spoke to students about differential diagnosis—the process of distinguishing mental health disorders with overlapping symptoms to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.
Following the discussion, Thom guided students through a hands-on diagnostic exercise using case studies of “Chris” and “Alyssa.” After reviewing each scenario, students shared their initial impressions and considered what additional information they would seek, as well as how they might proceed with each case. The exercise, though challenging, was spirited, insightful, and informative, offering an important perspective on what psychology looks like in the real world.
“It was a pleasure to have Thom speak with my students,” says Beaudin. “The opportunity to glimpse the art of diagnosis and case conceptualization is incredibly valuable to their understanding of abnormal psychology.”
“As a Canterbury student, I always appreciated opportunities to connect with alumni from a wide range of professional backgrounds, so I’m glad to give back in this way,” Thom adds.
Experiences like this bring classroom learning to life, helping students see how their studies connect to authentic applications, careers, and fields of interest. Thank you, Thom!
