Fellowships and Awards
There are a number of competitive national and University of Minnesota fellowships and awards for which University of Minnesota Morris students can apply and compete. The Academic Center for Enrichment (ACE) staff members work with Morris students to help them identify available fellowships and awards that they are eligible for and guide students as they go through the application process.

Covers all costs for summer program including travel, room and board, instruction, and visa fees.
Criteria
First Year, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
U.S. government sponsored scholarship to encourage study in languages of critical need.
Applicants participate in a summer program to study one of the following languages abroad: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian Turkish, or Urdu at varying skill levels (from beginning to advanced dependent on language choice).
Applicants should have the intention of continuing study in the language beyond the summer program.
DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Study Scholarships and Internships

DAAD offers a variety of study and internship programs in Germany ranging from several weeks long to one (or two) academic year study scholarships or internships.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Award Amount
Recipients will be awarded up to $5,000 (average $4,000) and are then eligible for the Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program if going to a designated country.
Criteria
First Year, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Study Abroad
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens who receive Pell Grants and intend to go abroad for at least four weeks (must not be a summer only program).
Preference is given to those studying outside of Western Europe and Australia.
Killam Fellowships to Canada

Award Amount
Fellowships range from $5,000 for a semester to $10,000 for a year.
Criteria
Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Study Abroad
Typically granted to sophomore or junior undergraduate students for one semester to one year of study in Canada.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and full-time students with exceptional academic records.
National Security Education Program (Boren) Scholarship

Award Amount
Provides up to $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for an academic year of study abroad.
Criteria
Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Study Abroad (Boren Fellowships available for graduate students)
This scholarship supports a year or term of study abroad focusing on the importance or international experience and language-learning in education.
The focus is primarily on areas/languages that are of critical interest to the United States and are underrepresented in study abroad.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens with strong academic records and an interest in language.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Covers up to $7,500 per year.

Supports students in the sciences, math, and engineering who intend to seek careers in these fields.
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply.
Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships

Award Amount
It awards up to $30,000 towards educational expenses for the final two to three years of study towards completion of a bachelor’s program.
Criteria
Sophomore, Transfer, recent community college graduate
This scholarship is awarded to current community college students who intend to transfer to a four-year college or university.
To be eligible students must have an exceptional academic record, demonstrate financial need, and be nominated by a faculty representative at their two-year institution to be considered.
Morris K. Udall Scholarship

Recipients receive up to $5,000 financial assistance.
Criteria
Sophomore, Junior
Must be pursuing a career related to the environment or be a Native American pursuing a career in tribal public policy or Native health care.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.
Students apply as sophomores or juniors and must be pursuing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree.
Must have a minimum B-average or 3.0 GPA.

Beinecke Scholarship Program

Successful applicants receive $4,000 prior to entering graduate school and $30,000 support while in graduate school.

Junior
To encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities otherwise not available to them.
Plan to seek a master’s or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
Must be a U.S. citizen or national and demonstrate financial need to apply.
Marshall Scholarship

Award Amount
Scholarship covers university fees, living expenses, research grants, and some travel.
Criteria
Junior, Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
Intended to allow American students with academic excellence (minimum 3.7 GPA) to pursue graduate studies for 2-3 years at a British university.
Students may apply either for either the one year or two year scholarship (NOT both).
Application process includes an application and interview.
Students may submit a preliminary application in the spring for award beginning in fall of the following year.
Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship

Award Amount
The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate school.

Junior (Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship available for graduate students)
For outstanding students interested in pursuing careers with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service.
Successful candidates must commit to three years as a Foreign Service Officer.
Harry Truman Scholarship

Scholarship provides up to $30,000 towards tuition, fees, room and board.
Criteria
Junior
For exceptional students pursuing graduate or professional studies and planning on a career in public service.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a record of public and community service, leadership, and strong academics.
Seniors

American – Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) Fellowships/Grants
Deadline
November the year preceding scholarship year (award time runs one year from summer to summer)
Award Amount
Provides funding for research or study for up to one year in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and/or Sweden. Fellowship recipients receive up to $23,000 while grants are for approximately $5,000.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate, Post-Graduate, Study Abroad
Eligible candidates must have their bachelor’s degree by start date.
It is preferred that candidates have some familiarity with host language.
Priority for fellowships is given to those working on their dissertation or research and intending to stay for a year.
Grants are typically utilized by students or professionals in the arts or conducting research for one to three months abroad.
Ford Foundation Pre-doctoral Fellowship for Minorities

Recipients receive up to a $20,000 stipend and $2,000 towards tuition and fees for a maximum of three years.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate
Eligible candidates are U.S. citizens or nationals with excellent academic records who intend to pursue a career in teaching and research at the college/university level and are seeking a Ph.D. or Sc.D.
Open to U.S. citizens or nationals who are members of one of the following generally underrepresented groups: African Americans, Alaska Natives, Mexican Americans/Chicanos, Native American, Native Pacific Islanders, Puerto Ricans.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program

Supports an independently designed study, research, or English Teaching Assistantship for one academic year abroad.
Criteria
Senior, recent BA/BS graduates, Graduate, Study Abroad
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program aims to promote and facilitate cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Must be a U.S. citizen to apply and proposed study must take place in one of 140 Fulbright designated countries.
Basic knowledge of host language is preferred.
It is suggested that students begin working with the University of Minnesota, Morris Fulbright representative at least four months prior to application deadline.
Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Scholarship covers University of Cambridge college fees, airfare, and a living allowance.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
Students must apply for and be admitted to the University of Cambridge seeking a PH.D., masters, second bachelor degree, or other one-year post-graduate program.
Must not be United Kingdom citizens.
Applicants must have excellent academic records and either have English as their native language or provide proof of English language proficiency.
Hertz Fellowship

Award Amount
Amount varies depending on fellowship option, but includes full tuition and a living stipend for two to five years.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate
Students wishing to seek a Ph.D. in applied physical, biological, and engineering sciences may apply provided that they are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Recipients may choose between three options for fellowship awards , the five year Hertz or Coordinated, or the supplemental stipend.
Huygens Scholarship

Award Amount
Funds up to two years of graduate studies in the Netherlands leading to a master’s degree. Scholarship funds tuition, living, and travel expenses (approximately €28,000).
Criteria
Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
Applicants should apply directly to their preferred university in the Netherlands and note that you would like to be considered for the Huygens Scholarship.
Must be nominated by the Dutch university to submit scholarship application.
Applicants should be ranked in the top 10 percent of their undergraduate program and cannot be older than 35 years of age by term start date.
Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program

Award Amount
Fellows receive an institutional payment (for tuition and fees) and a stipend of up to $30,000.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents.
Supports one to four years of graduate study (Ph.D. or MFA) in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
Fellows are selected based on a combination of factors including financial need, academic record, and promise.
Luce Scholars Program

Award Amount
Provides a living stipend and internship placement in Asia for one-year.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
Provides those with limited experience in Asian studies the opportunity to pursue a one-year internship in Asia.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and should demonstrate strong leadership ability and have an outstanding academic record.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree by beginning of placement.
To apply for this scholarship, students must work with the Morris fellowships and awards coordinator.
James Madison Fellowship

Award Amount
The maximum award is $24,000 total which is paid over the course of study.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate
Applicants must be U.S. citizens seeking a master’s degree to teach American history, government, or social studies for grades 7–12. Their plan must include study of the constitution.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree by August 31st of the year in which they apply.
George Mitchell Scholarship

Award Amount:
Scholarship funds go towards tuition, housing, living expenses, and international travel for one year of postgraduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Criteria:
Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
Applicants must pursue postgraduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland; field of study is open.
To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens who demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and academic promise.
Applicants will need to submit letters of recommendation and institutional endorsement.
National Science Foundation (NSF)

Award Amount
Fellowship provides financial support for up to three years, amounts vary.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate
Fellowship is available for students seeking graduate study in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Applicants should be college seniors or have completed no more than one year of graduate studies.
Interested students must provide a profile of educational and research experiences and interests.
Rhodes Scholarship

Covers university fees and a living stipend typically for two to three years of study (depending on degree program).
Criteria
Senior, Graduate, Study Abroad
For outstanding students with leadership potential in any field.
Applicants should be students of high academic achievement and leadership skills and must have endorsement from the institution.
Samuel Huntington Public Service Award

Award Amount
Award provides graduating college seniors a $10,000 stipend to pursue public service for one year upon graduation. Public service may take place in the United States or abroad.

Senior
Applicants must create a project proposal (including budget) that benefits the public good.
Project can be done independently or with charity, religious, educational, governmental, or public service organizations.
Any student graduating from an accredited university in the United States is welcome to apply.
Selection will be made by the Samuel Huntington Fund based on applicant proposals, academic record, personal achievements, and recommendations.
Scoville Peace Fellowships

Award Amount
Fellows receive a $2,300 stipend each month, health insurance, and travel to Washington, D.C. as well as $500 to attend relevant conferences/meetings.

Senior, Graduate
This fellowship provides recent graduates and graduate students with the opportunity to learn about peace and security issues through a six to nine month internship in Washington, D.C. with participating organizations.
Applicants must hold bachelor’s degree by beginning of fellowship. Fellows receive a stipend to assist with living expenses.
Soros Fellowship for New Americans

Award Amount
Provides up to $20,000 and a partial tuition grant for up to two years for graduate study.
Criteria
Senior, Graduate
For new Americans (resident aliens, naturalized U.S. citizens, or child of naturalized citizens) pursuing graduate study.
Applicants must be under thirty-one years old at the time of application and should have strong academic records, initiative, and potential.
Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship

The current award is for up to $25,000 for one academic year abroad.

Must be a senior at any University of Minnesota campus at time of application
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a minimum GPA of 3.50 and at least 30 semester credits taken in residence.
Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice

Award Amount
One fellow is chosen each year and benefits include a salary of approximately $38,000 and health care benefits.

Provides recent graduates with the opportunity to work with Families U.S.A. in Washington, D.C. for one year.
Families U.S.A. is a national organization which focuses on healthcare policies and legislation and aims to enhance the pool of social justice leaders coming from traditionally underrepresented populations.

May be students from a variety of disciplines and must be visiting a country other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand with an emphasis on language study.
Should be able to identify how your proposed area of study contributes to U.S. national security and future career goals.
