Patients at awarded hospitals had lower complication rates, Healthgrades analysis shows
The Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award (PSEA) is based on a review of 13 Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) within the Medicare inpatient population treated at the United States’s nearly 4,500 hospitals from 2022-2024.
Hospitals must meet four eligibility requirements to earn a Patient Safety Excellence Award: It must be in the top 80% of hospitals for clinical quality; there must be zero occurrence of PSI05 "retained surgical item or unretrieved device fragment count"; it must have data for seven of eight core patient safety indicators; and must have at least 15 patients evaluated across three years and five patients within the last year for at least seven of the eight core patient safety indicators.

Healthgrades’ annual analysis revealed significant performance gaps between the nation’s highest-and lowest-achieving facilities, making it increasingly important for consumers to seek care at a hospital with top safety ratings. During the 2022-2024 study period, 167,228 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients at U.S. hospitals, with four PSIs accounting for nearly 78% of all incidents. Patients treated at Northwell hospitals and other award-winning facilities had a profoundly lower risk of experiencing these leading complications:
Pressure sores or
bed sores
acquired in the hospital (71.9% less likely)
Catheter-related
bloodstream infections
acquired in the hospital (67.8% less likely)
Collapsed lung
due to a procedure in or around the chest (57.5% less likely)
In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (52.4% less likely)
Newsweek ranks 12 Northwell hospitals among the nation’s best-in-state for 2026
America’s Best‑in‑State Hospitals 2026 list recognizes excellence in patient care, quality, and experience.
Statistics are calculated from Healthgrades Patient Safety Ratings and Excellence Award methodology, which is based primarily on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s technical specifications to MedPAR data from approximately 4,500 hospitals for 2022 through 2024 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
The Healthgrades rating is only the latest honor for these hospitals. Huntington Hospital, Glen Cove Hospital, and Mather Hospital
were among five Northwell hospitals
that earned five stars as part of the Medicare and Medicaid Services 2025 CMS Star Quality Rating System. As a New York State Department of Health Primary Stroke Center, Plainview Hospital is a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Award.
