Types of accommodation
Accommodation options that help you feel at home
Choosing accommodation can be daunting, but we're here to guide you through the different types available, enabling you to make an informed decision.
Our accommodation options range from on-campus halls of residence on both our Bishop Otter (Chichester) and Bognor Regis campuses, to our Student Villages situated to the south of the picturesque city centre of Chichester.
Choose between ensuite and shared style (i.e. with communal bathrooms and kitchens) accommodation, with catered or self-catered packages allocated on a single occupancy basis.
We also have a range of freshly refurbished off-campus properties meeting the growing demand for our brand-new type of studio accommodation, which can be offered as single or dual occupancy.
Our accommodation is
allocated by a randomised lottery-based system
, based on your submitted accommodation application, which will list your 6
types
of accommodation choices (or 3
types
for students undertaking a teaching degree).

Halls Versus Home
Choosing the right option
Whether you decide to commute from home, find private housing, or apply for university halls, there is an option for everyone.
It's important to remember that it's a personal decision and you may not immediately know which option will work best for you.
To help you with your decision, we’ve provided a quick summary of the different options.
Adapted and Priority Accommodation
Here to help you find the right room for you
Students with physical disabilities and/or medical conditions may need priority for a particular type of accommodation because of their condition.
For example, you may need priority for ensuite because of a medical condition, priority for self-catered accommodation because of significant dietary conditions, or you may feel it will be a strain for you to be living off-campus because of your condition.
We also have rooms available that feature standard adaptations for wheelchair users.
Each of these rooms is fitted with a panic alarm and has a either a large wet-room with shower seat or shower cubical area with seat, handrails and an additional panic alarm.
Important
Each wheelchair user will have individual requirements depending on their level of mobility, so it's essential to talk to the Disability Team (
disability@chi.ac.uk
) by 31 March to make sure we allocate the most appropriate room, and implement any necessary adaptations before your arrival.
Other minor modifications to rooms and residences can be made according to your requirements - talk to the Disability Team to discuss your needs at
disability@chi.ac.uk

Accommodation FAQs
Frequently asked questions
When can I apply for accommodation?
Expand
You will be able to apply for your accommodation from Tuesday 5 May - Sunday 21 June 2026.
You will need to do this via the Online Accommodation Portal once you have logged on to your ChiView account.
This does NOT operate on a first come first served basis. Once the portal closes all the applications will be viewed as equal and go into our accommodation allocation system which will allocate rooms based on people’s preferences.
Find out more on our
how to apply
page.
When will I find out if I have been allocated accommodation?
Expand
You will be advised, via email, of the accommodation you have been offered by the beginning of September.
How many people are the facilities shared between?
Expand
Most facilities are shared between 5 to 7 people.
Can I bring a car?
Expand
We're working hard to create a greener environment and reduce traffic in Chichester. That's why we don't offer parking at most of our university-managed properties.
Good news if you're staying at one of the Havenstoke houses or on campus in Bognor Regis! You can apply for a parking permit for £305 for your 39-week stay. Keep in mind that these permits are limited and given out on a first-come, first-served basis. We'll send all those who are eligible an application once they have been allocated their accommodation.
To make getting around easier, we've teamed up with Stagecoach to offer free bus travel between campuses for all our students. Check out the
707 bus timetable
on the Stagecoach website for more information.
Do I need a TV licence?
Expand
You need to be covered by a valid TV licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast or via iPlayer. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.
What do I need to bring?
Expand
You will need to bring bedding and towels, crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans and any start up groceries you may require.
All kitchens will be provided with kettles, toasters, microwaves, ovens and mop/bucket.
Further details will be included in your e-induction sent during the first week of September or can be found in your Handbook for Residents.
When are the accommodation fees due?
Expand
The accommodation fees are divided into three instalments of 40%, 40% and 20%. The first is due in October, the second in January and the third in April.
