Albany Medical College has been educating nurse anesthetists since 1951. The Center for Nurse Anesthesiology educates and prepares competent, entry-level nurse anesthesia practitioners.

Our Philosophy
It is the philosophy of the Center for Nurse Anesthesiology that Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) should demonstrate sound professional, moral, and ethical standards in practice, as well as demonstrate accountability for the quality of services they provide. They must be prepared to assume leadership roles in the profession, be knowledgeable about factors that influence their practice, understand their evolving role as contemporary nurse anesthesia practitioners, and recognize their significance in the health care delivery system.
Our Important Role
CRNAs administer more than 50 million anesthetics to patients each year in the US. CRNAs are the primary anesthesia providers in rural, critical access hospitals. The independently practicing CRNA enables rural health care facilities to offer obstetrical, pain management, surgical, and trauma stabilization services. CRNAs also collaborate with surgeons, dentists, podiatrists, and physician anesthesiologists to provide anesthesia services in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered.

Our Program
Our Nurse Anesthesiology program offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree.
Please note, the landscape for CRNA entry requirements has changed, and a Master of Science degree is no longer offered. By 2025, all new CRNAs must hold a doctoral degree to practice, as it is the new standard for entering the field. This is based on the increasing complexity of cases and the increased demand for advanced education among nurse anesthetists.
Albany Medical Center is the primary campus for clinical experiences, but the clinical portion of the program is enhanced by rotations to multiple clinical affiliation sites in the northeast. Students also practice hands-on learning in our simulation center.
Who Should Apply?
Graduates of an accredited registered nursing (RN) program
Individuals with current RN licensure in the U.S.
An RN with at least two years (within the last five years) of critical care experience in the U.S.
