Women and Newborns Care in Western Iowa
At Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, we believe in individualized, family-centered care, and we’re proud to deliver more babies than any other hospital in western Iowa. We've designed our large, private rooms with the safety and comfort of mothers in mind. Some of the features include:
Bedside Check-in
We offer bedside check-in. When you arrive to deliver your baby, you’re taken to your private room where you can be checked in from the comfort of your bed. You will labor, deliver, recover and spend your postpartum time (LDRP) all in the same room with the same caring staff.
Wireless Electronic Fetal Monitoring
Your baby's heart rate and your contractions can be monitored without requiring you to be attached by wires. This means you can move around the room and halls to help your labor progress – all while your and your baby’s health are being safely monitored.
Same-Sided Room Design
Our rooms are designed with all equipment in the same place – making it easier for the staff to quickly deliver care to you and baby. Our beds are equipped with a Tempur-Pedic mattress for comfort. The beds can be placed in many different positions to assist with individual labor preferences. The beds can be reconfigured rapidly to aid changes in labor.
Jacuzzi Tubs
Some rooms are equipped with a Jacuzzi tub to help ease your pain during labor.
In-Room Medical Equipment
Each labor and delivery room is equipped with surgery-grade lighting in the ceiling to ensure your physician or midwife have maximum light for your delivery. The rooms are also designed with storage to keep most medical equipment out of sight until needed.
For Baby
Once baby is born, they will need a warm place for the first examination. A special cabinet houses a portable baby warmer, oxygen lines and other medical needs in the unlikely case baby needs these.
Safety for Mom and Baby
No one plans on a complicated birth. However, sometimes your baby may need extra attention from our pediatricians. Our rooms are each designed with enough space to accommodate an entire code team should that be necessary. Each room also has a “code pink” button which automatically calls extra team members to the bedside to assist your newborn.
Newborn Care
After your baby is born, we can provide care for babies 34 weeks gestation and up in our Level II nursery. Even if you deliver by cesarean section, we will allow your healthy infant to stay with you as much as possible to promote skin-to-skin contact.
Level II Neonatal ICU (NICU)
Our four-bed Level II NICU is available for babies born at 34 weeks or above that require additional care. Our goal is to keep moms and babies together whenever possible, but should your newborn need a higher level of care, we transfer to Methodist Women’s Hospital’s Level III NICU in Omaha.
