Volunteers play a vital role in helping Gritman Medical Center provide exceptional care to the communities we serve. Their time, commitment, and compassion support patients, families, and staff throughout the hospital. In return, volunteers gain meaningful connections, personal fulfillment, and a chance to make a real difference. Becoming a volunteer means joining the Gritman family and embracing the Gritman Way by following the same standards of confidentiality, ethics, and excellence that guide our staff.
Every year, volunteers contribute skills, energy, and kindness that strengthen our mission and improve patient experiences throughout the organization.

About Volunteering at Gritman
Gritman volunteers help create a welcoming, supportive environment across the entire organization. There are a variety of pathways that match different educational and career goals, interests, skill sets, and stages of life. Undergraduate and graduate students can explore health care opportunities through clinical and non-clinical placements and invitation-only internships. We support younger learners through opportunities for High School Senior Projects and Junior Volunteering. Community members contribute in support areas including our information desk, Bertie’s gift shop, sewing projects, and community outreach events.
All opportunities are listed in our online project catalog where each assignment is clearly outlined. Whether someone is seeking personal growth, professional exploration, community service, or a meaningful way to share their time and talents, the volunteer program provides fulfilling ways to get involved.

The Importance of Volunteering at Gritman
Volunteers help create moments of comfort and support during some of life’s most challenging times. Their presence enhances the care experience, strengthens trust, and deepens Gritman’s connection to the region.
Gritman is also proud to recognize the work of two special volunteer groups whose service enriches our mission. The Gritman Auxiliary has supported the hospital for generations through service, fundraising, and handcrafted gifts for patients, including thousands of blankets, quilts, pillowcases, and stuffed frogs.

Chaplain Service 24/7
Our Volunteer Chaplains provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones, offering care that honors the whole person. Their presence reflects our commitment to compassion, dignity, and healing.
In this short essay, Gritman Lay Chaplain Rodney Frey offers his experiences while serving a dying patient and his family, and reflects on what he shares with the other Gritman chaplains, as well as what he uniquely brings to the care of those in need.
