Working Equids & Sustainable Development
Working horses, donkeys and mules are critical to their owners’ livelihoods. They support income generation in agriculture, tourism and transport.
Working livestock's vital role in sustainable development
An estimated 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules contribute to the livelihoods of many poor communities around the world, yet their contribution to sustainable development is largely overlooked. It also highlights how the contribution of working equids is helping to meet the UN's sustainable development goals.
THE CONTRIBUTION OF WORKING LIVESTOCK TO FOOD SECURITY
Working livestock help 600 million people globally feed themselves and their families. These animals transport water for crops, carry agricultural produce to and from markets, and help their owners earn an income to buy nutritious food.
The role of equine animals as vital water providers
Brooke is helping communities and their animals access clean water close to their homes, supporting the attainment of the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 – clean water and sanitation.

WE WORK WITH WOMEN
An estimated two-thirds of livestock keepers in developing countries – approximately 400 million – are women. Brooke works to enhance the mutually beneficial relationship women have with working horses, donkeys and mules and advocates for this relationship to be recognised in gender and livestock policy.
