Our Transplant Services
At RWJBarnabas Health, our patients have access to nationally recognized
organ transplant and procurement programs for adults and children. With
focuses in heart, lung, kidney, and pancreas transplantation, the RWJBarnabas
Health teams utilize transplant techniques offered at only a few of the
world’s leading transplant centers.
Each team is led by transplant physicians and transplant surgeons, who
work closely with experienced, registered transplant coordinators, social
workers and support staff. Our programs offer hope and the gift of life
to many who may once have been considered ineligible for transplant. RWJBarnabas
Health is a world-class leader in transplant research, clinical trials,
anti-rejection medications and many other clinical advances that support
patient care.
RWJBarnabas Health is home to one of the nation’s top fifteen heart
transplant programs, with locations in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center
and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick.
Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is home to the seventh largest kidney
transplant program in the country with a strong focus on research. Transplanting
both adults and children, Cooperman Barnabas is a national leader in creating
complex kidney exchanges. With close to 400 transplant surgeries performed
each year, it is among the
largest living donor kidney transplant
programs in the U.S.
The Advanced Heart Failure Treatment Transplant Program at Newark Beth
Israel Medical Center has performed more than 1,200 heart transplants,
one of less than twenty centers in the country to reach this milestone.
The Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Center at Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital in New Brunswick has an expert multi-disciplinary team, led by
board-certified physicians from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School,
with extensive resources to support the region’s most critically
ill patients who may not qualify for transplant at other centers. The
center is home to the state’s largest pancreas transplant program,
as well as a pediatric kidney transplant program at The Bristol-Myer’s
Squibb Children’s Hospital.
Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is home to New Jersey’s only Lung
Transplant program, part of the hospital’s Advanced Lung Diseases
and Transplant program.
Our Living Kidney Donor Programs
The Living Donor Institute at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and the
Living Donor Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital gives
ordinary people the opportunity to do the extraordinary: save the life
of another person by donating a kidney. By helping kidney transplant patients
get off the wait list sooner—and by freeing up deceased donor organs
for other people—living donors not only save two lives, they make
a positive impact on the lives of countless others in the process.

Patient Stories
Marcio Medeiros & Elizabeth Zushma, living donor story
“Living donation does not just lead to shorter wait times, but also
better outcomes, making it one of the most effective paths to successful
transplantation.”
Daisy Vasquez, kidney transplant recipient
“Being able to give Carlos the gift of life is a blessing, and I
hope our story inspires others to do the same."
Ivan Sales & Edgar “Butch” Sanchez, living donor story
“You’re not dying on me. I’m going to give you my kidney.”
Naiya Atkins, heart transplant recipient
Naiya says she feels like a walking miracle and is blessed to be surrounded
by all the doctors, nurses and medical staff at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Nandan Savalia, heart transplant recipient
“My team of doctors did a great job. There is a reason that many
in the hospital say that Dr. Ikegami has the hand of God.”
Brian Lydell, kidney recipient
“I tell him he’s Superman and he can do no wrong. It’s
such a great gesture that it’s hard to put into words and say something
that would do it justice."
Marcela Urrego, lung transplant recipient
“Getting a transplant has changed my life completely. I am very grateful.”
Tony M, lung transplant recipient
“They gave me a second chance for life…and held my hand when
it needed to be held."
Give the Gift of Life
Although there have been advances in medical technology, the demand for
organ and tissue donation still vastly exceeds the number of donors.
More than 100,000 people in the United States are awaiting a life-saving
organ transplant.
86% of those waiting are in need of a kidney
You can live with only one kidney.
Nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents are on the transplant waiting list.
In 2024, 7,030 people were living donors.
Transplantable organs include: heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas and
intestine.
There is no age limit to donation and a national computer system matches
donated organs to recipients.
Your medical care will not be compromised because of your decision to donate.
17 people die waiting for an organ transplant each day.
There is no cost to be an organ and tissue donor…donation is a gift.
