Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a menstrual disorder that causes irregular periods. It’s related to a hormonal imbalance involving the ovaries. Teens who have PCOS may have many small cysts in their ovaries.
Teens with PCOS can have heavy or skipped periods. They may have excess
acne
and hair on the face, chest and back. Some have weight gain and dark, thick skin around the neck, armpits or breasts. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar (
diabetes
) can also happen.
