“Defence-Spending” really means Public Sacrifice
As illustrated by the headlines on Page 1 of the Metro of 16th April, the support for the war narrative in governments and potential governments is now being carefully constructed in effect to justify the further decay of public services and infrastructure, the very things that provide the foundations for a healthy society and a functioning economy.
As the warmongers ramp up their demands for an expansion of “defence” spending, the military keynsianism option which will stimulate is clearly shown to be unsupportable – as well as pouring public money into the pockets of the arms industry. Growth on the back of war? Dumber and dumber unless you are acting in the service of those that make money out of it..
Time to wake up, says the Peace Party. Government doesn’t spend like our own household budgets. The government neither has to tax or borrow before it can spend. The government of the day is the currency issuer and the spending cycle starts there. It’s as simple as that.
Political priorities drive spending choices not a limited pot of money. But in the narrative now being suggested by politicians, the warfare over welfare model can be expected to be endlessly pumped out by a complicit media. They’ll endlessly explain those decisions as a shortage of money and the need for yet more public sacrifice on the pyre of war and austerity.
The Peace Party does not want to see any government – of whatever hue – to use the real resources it has at its disposal to be used for endless wars and to increase the profits of the corporations. Lovers of Peace – and all that that means – want to see the creation of a functioning society that puts the needs of people over the enriching of corporations at the expense of people’s lives.
