The laboratories at Capital Health Regional Medical Center and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the leading accreditation organization of pathology and laboratory medicine.
For more than 70 years, the CAP has fostered excellence in laboratories and advanced the practice of pathology and laboratory science. As medicine, technology and pathology have evolved since 1946, the CAP has led the way to meet new challenges that result in better patient outcomes.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP's) Laboratory Accreditation Program accredits the entire spectrum of laboratory test disciplines with the most scientifically rigorous customized checklist requirements.
The CAP's Laboratory Accreditation Program follows a peer-based inspector model that provides a unique balance of regulatory and educational coaching supported by the most respected worldwide pathology organization.
In order to earn CAP Laboratory Accreditation, Capital Health’s laboratories had to:
Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulatory requirements
Ensure compliance through the guidance of the most comprehensive scientifically endorsed laboratory standards
Maintain accuracy of test results and ensure accurate patient diagnosis
Increase the value they bring to organizations, customers, and patients
All of Capital Health's laboratories, both clinical and anatomic, voluntarily submit to CAP's peer-based inspection model, which uses teams of practicing professionals qualified through a CAP training program. On-site inspections occur every two years using CAP Accreditation Checklists to assess Capital Health’s compliance with program requirements.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) granted the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program deeming authority, which allows CAP inspection in lieu of a CMS inspection. It is also recognized by The Joint Commission, and can be used to meet many state certification requirements.
