From Workshop to Wildlfe - Nest Boxes in Action

It's spring and everywhere birds are pairing up and building their nests. To lend them a helping hand during this busy season, people can put up nest boxes. Species like the blue tit often struggle to find natural nesting spaces due to modern buildings and habitat loss, so nest boxes provide a safe place for them to breed.
Our friends at APNABI (Autismo Bizkaia) have made a wonderful contribution to this effort. Always busy with creative projects, they built this excellent nest box in their woodwork class. We've installed it just outside the centre, and we're sure the birds will be nice and cosy inside. Over the coming weeks, we'll be monitoring it to see if it becomes occupied. A big thank you to everyone at APNABI for the fantastic work!
At this time of year, we also monitor the 55 nest boxes that form part of our annual project.
These boxes are used by species such as the blue tit and the great tit and we check them weekly to follow the progress of each nest. We're particularly interested in how extreme weather events influence breeding success.
This work is carried out by Denzel, Udane, Aitzol and Danel, the FP students currently completing their work experience with us
So why not join the ever growing team of people helping birds in the breeding season.? Easy to install and maintain, nest boxes are a small action that can make a big difference for both birds and people.
