About
The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) supports a healthy and trusted financial marketplace in California through regulation and enforcement that protects consumers and enables responsible innovation. We are a regulator, educator and convener, overseeing a variety of financial services, products and professionals, as well as guiding the implementation of emerging technologies.
DFPI Mission
Serve Californians by effectively overseeing financial service providers; enforcing laws and regulations; promoting innovation and fair and honest business practices; enhancing consumer awareness; and protecting consumers by preventing potential marketplace risks, fraud, and abuse.

DFPI provides protection to consumers and services to businesses engaged in financial transactions.

History
In 1903, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt led Congress to enact legislation creating a Bureau of Corporations as a division of the Department of Commerce and Labor. The Bureau of Corporations was later abolished in 1914 when Congress created the Federal Trade Commission.
