About our Biobanking service
We are proud to operate the NSW Health Statewide Biobank, supporting world-class health and medical research in NSW.
It’s a state-of-the-art storage facility or safe house for tissue samples, tumour cells, DNA and blood samples used for vital research into population health, human illness and disease.
This pathway to better research will lead to better treatments for the people of NSW.
Service overview
The biobank is a game changer for health and medical research in NSW.
It’s made possible through a partnership between the Office for Health and Medical Research, NSW Health Pathology, Sydney Local Health District and Health Infrastructure.
Certified and purpose-built, it’s located in the heart of a renowned research hub within the Professor Marie Bashir Centre on the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Campus, Sydney.
It has the technology to safely store and process more than 3 million samples.
It can support research projects, clinical trials and biospecimen collections anywhere in NSW, offering:
sample collection at NSWHP collection sites across the state
transport, processing, storage and access
data linkage via the CHeReL.
Support is also offered for large-scale population studies to help track health trends across the state and disease-specific studies, such as cancer, heart disease, dementia, diabetes and rare diseases.
Participation and consent
Obtaining informed consent for future unspecified biobanking research is a recognised challenge for the international research community.
That’s why we helped develop the
NSW Health Consent Toolkit
which standardises processes to support broad-based, ethical and informed consent.
It provides support, guidance, expertise and templates for those seeking consent from participants to donate samples and link personal information to these samples.
