Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
About the Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
The purpose of the Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in Louisiana through a comprehensive approach. We accomplish this by:
Making sure that healthcare providers are testing children under the age of 6 for lead in their blood
Testing homes for lead hazards so we can help identify ways to reduce or eliminate lead in the home
What help do we offer?
We offer the following services to children, families, healthcare professionals, and the community at-large:
Maintenance of a data surveillance system to receive and monitor blood lead test results of children under the age of 16
Identification of and care coordination for children aged six and younger with blood lead levels of 3.5µg/dL or higher
No-cost environmental assessments for children age 6 and younger with blood lead levels of 5µg/dL or higher
Community and professional education on childhood lead poisoning prevention
Clinical guidance for healthcare professionals on routine pediatric lead screening
Provision of guidelines and resources for lead-based paint abatement contractors
How are we funded and who are our national partners?
This program is primarily funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support childhood lead poisoning prevention efforts in Louisiana. The Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (LCLPPP) receives all blood lead laboratory reports for children younger than 16 residing in Louisiana and contributes this data to the CDC’s national lead poisoning surveillance system. The program also promotes and aligns with the CDC’s national guidelines for lead poisoning prevention.
