Mount St. Dominic Academy had the honor of welcoming Cardinal Joseph Tobin to celebrate the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas, marking a meaningful day of Mass, reflection, and reaffirmation of the school’s Dominican tradition of uniting faith, reason, and intellectual inquiry.
Mount St. Dominic Academy had the honor of welcoming His Eminence, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, in celebration of the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the great Dominican saint whose intellectual legacy continues to shape our mission. It was a privilege to have Cardinal Tobin return to the Mount after he had visited in 2018 in celebration of the Mount’s 125th anniversary.
Cardinal Tobin was warmly received by our community and given a school tour by two senior leaders, who had the privilege of sharing the life and spirit of the Mount. He then celebrated Mass for the students, Dominican Sisters, board members, faculty, and staff, marking the feast day with reverence and joy.
In a reflection before Mass, Mount student Cathleen ’27 beautifully articulated the lasting intellectual and spiritual tradition passed on by St. Thomas Aquinas to the Dominican Order: “Aquinas stressed the fact that intelligence is not only about memorization, but instead asking meaningful questions and following them logically. By connecting faith, logic, and curiosity, his example encourages each and every one of us to use our abilities with purpose.” Her words captured Aquinas’ vision that faith and reason are not opposed, but harmoniously pointed toward the truth.
In his homily, Cardinal Tobin affirmed that the young women of the Mount are following in the footsteps of St. Thomas Aquinas as they embrace the great adventure of education. He encouraged our students to remain courageous in their pursuit of truth, and confident that disciplined inquiry and a spirit of wonder are themselves acts of faith.
We are deeply grateful to Cardinal Tobin for honoring our community with his presence and for celebrating this meaningful feast day with the Mount. His visit was a powerful reminder that at the Mount, education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but the formation of minds and hearts in truth and charity.
