You’re more likely to feel in control of your health by actively participating in your care. Here’s
how you can prepare
for your neurologist appointment:
Arrive early to fill out any required paperwork and collect your thoughts
Bring a family member or a friend to offer support and a second “ear”
Bring a list of current medications (including over the counter medications and supplements)
Bring notes of the most important issues, questions or symptoms you want to discuss with the doctor
Bring outside medical records (reports, clinic notes, imaging), if appropriate
Bring something to write with and on
Bring your insurance and ID card
Neurological disorders are diseases of the brain, spine and nerves. There are more than 600 diseases of the nervous system, such as brain tumors, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and stroke. During a neurological exam, your neurologist will review your health history and ask questions about the symptoms you’re currently experiencing.
You will then have a physical exam to assess your vision, strength, coordination, memory, reasoning and problem-solving abilities, reflexes and ability to feel physical objects, smell odors and interpret sounds.
The results of your test will help your neurologist determine if your problem stems from the brain or nervous system. You may need further testing to confirm a diagnosis or determine which treatment is best for you.

Diagnosis beings with an examination that includes a thorough look at your complete medical history, a physical examination, detailed neurological examination and specialized tests, including:
Advanced imaging, such as head CT or MRI
EEG (electroencephalogram) to see if there is any abnormal electrical brain activity
Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
Blood tests to help identify or rule out underlying conditions
24-hour observation
Since no two neurological conditions are the same, our neurologists use a wide range of diagnostic tools and evaluations to determine the best treatment options for you. You and your doctor will work together to create a treatment plan that is customized to your unique needs and concerns. In addition to the treatment options we provide as part of the standard of care for your condition, you may be able to take part in one of our clinical trials.

here
.
While not all neurological disorders can be prevented, certain health and lifestyle changes may reduce your risk of some conditions like stroke and dementia, including:
Avoiding smoking
Exercising regularly
Limiting alcohol
Maintaining a healthy diet – include antioxidant-rich foods in your diet, such as legumes, seafood and whole grains
Managing health conditions – control high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol
Prioritizing sleep
Staying mentally active
Wearing personal protective equipment, such as helmets, during risky activities
The term dementia refers to a set of symptoms, not a specific disease.
Alzheimer's disease
is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior, and is the most common form of dementia.
Though an exact cause is yet to be identified, research has shown that
multiple sclerosis (MS)
develops when a patient’s immune system attacks the central nervous system (CNS), damaging the protective sheath around the nerve fibers (myelin). This disrupts signals to the brain, causing a range of neurological and functional symptoms that progress over time.
The first signs of
Parkinson’s disease
may be vague, such as a slight tremor in one hand, not swinging the arms while walking or lost ability to show facial expressions. Over time, symptoms will worsen and may progress to include:
Cognitive deficit
Decreased ability to perform automatic movements such as blinking
Depression
Difficulty writing
Dragging the feet
Fecal or urinary incontinence
Impaired speech and swallowing
Muscle stiffness or rigidity
Posture and balance problems
Severe tremors in both hands
Sexual dysfunction
Slow movement (bradykinesia)
Sudden drops in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
Taking shorter steps
Trouble sleeping
High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is a leading cause of
stroke
, so we treat it with medications and, possibly, anticoagulants if we discover a patient has a problem with blood clots.
Lifestyle changes are also important in preventing stroke, so quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting enough exercise and adequate sleep, and eliminating stress can all contribute to avoiding a stroke.
Epilepsy
disrupts the activity and electrical signals in your brain, causing spontaneous seizures. The type of seizure a person has depends on a variety of things, such as the part of the brain affected and the underlying cause of the seizure:
Grand mal or tonic-clonic seizures
include convulsions or uncontrolled, violent shaking with loss of consciousness.
Petit mal or absence seizures
, are characterized by a blank stare for 10 to 20 seconds followed by a quick return to normal alertness. This type of seizure is common in children.
Temporal lobe or focal seizures
, which may include confusion, staring, lip smacking, repeated swallowing or chewing, unusual finger movements or picking motions.
