Lysandra Castro Marquez is a Biologist at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) in the Mechanistic Toxicology Branch in the Molecular Pathogenesis Group with Dr. Darlene Dixon. Castro was born and raised in Carolina, Puerto Rico. She received a Bachelor of Science in cellular and molecular biology from the Universidad Metropolitana (UMET) in Puerto Rico in 2002. In that same year she joined the Summers of Discovery program in the Division of Intramural Research at NIEHS. After a summer experience, Castro had the opportunity to stay and join the Laboratory of Molecular Carcinogenesis where she worked for a year as an IRTA fellow with Theodora R. Devereux. Castro joined Dixon‘s laboratory in 2003 as a Biologist in the Cellular and Molecular Pathology Branch. In 2011, the group moved to the National Toxicology Laboratory Branch, now the Mechanistic Toxicology Branch in DTT. Castro’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of environmental metals and chemicals on the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids using human cell-based 2D and 3D
in vitro
models.
