About Ute Mountain Ute Environmental Programs Department
The Ute Mountain Ute Environmental Programs Department is responsible for administering public health and environmental protection programs on the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal lands. The mission of this department is to improve the quality of life for all Tribal Members. The Environmental Programs Department has developed several programs to address environmental health concerns on the Reservation.
Sustainability
The UMUT strives to become environmentally and economically sustainable. The EPD serves the communities to minimize waste and conserve its natural resources for future generations.
Environmental Education
The EPD offers curriculum materials and other resources to Towaoc, White Mesa and surrounding area’s educators and youth leaders who are interested in inspiring youth become environmental steward
Water Conservation
Water is the most precious resource and its availability is limited regardless of dry or wet period. Many factors affect the availability and capacity of wastewater treatment. So it is responsibility of every person to continue and increase water conservation efforts to support the human population growth and to protect the functions of environment.
Trees and Landscaping
Native plants of the UMUT lands provide great beauty, shade and environmental benefits. The purpose of this site is to assist Towaoc and White Mesa residents plan and install the landscape using the native plants.
Drinking Water
The Towaoc and White Mesa Water System is owned and operated by the UMUT. It serves over 2,200 residential, commercial and industrial accounts in Montezuma County Colorado and San Juan County Utah.
Weed Management
The EPD is UMUT’s headquarter for the information about weed management. Currently, we are working on saltcedar project using chemical and biological control.

Work with Communities to conserve resources and protect the environment in order to increase the quality of life for all members and future generations of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe (UMUT).
