Far Eastern University’s Institute of Law opened its doors in 1934, making it one of the older colleges of law in the country.  It prides itself as a pedigreed law school from whose ranks two other law schools located in the university belt were formed.  The Institute is proud of its alumni whose accomplishments have honored their alma mater and the legal profession.  These include a Chief Justice and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, several Associate Justices of the Court of Appeals and the Sandiganbayan, a Secretary of Justice, and numerous trial court judges and government prosecutors.  In addition, many of its graduates now occupy positions of leadership in the community and play vital roles in legal practice, business and government service.  The Institute also has the distinction of having two Senate Presidents serve as Dean, Jovito Salonga from 1957 to 1961 and Neptali Gonzales from 1976 to 1986.
In 2003, the Institute partnered with De La Salle University’s Graduate School of Business to offer a joint Juris Doctor – Master of Business Administration program, the first graduate dual degree program in law and business administration.  The dual degree program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in two interrelated disciplines and to understand the interrelationships between them.
In 2014, the Institute of Law, now under the leadership of Dean Melencio S. Sta. Maria, made several changes to better cope with the changing legal landscape. First was the transfer of the Institute from the Manila Campus to the Makati Campus of the Far Eastern University.  Second, was the shift from the Bachelor of Laws degree to the Juris Doctor degree.  The Institute likewise ended its partnership with De La Salle University and no longer offers the joint Juris Doctor – Master of Business Administration degree.  The Institute has also encouraged its students to participate in various international moot court competitions and has consistently represented both the University and the country in prestigious moot court competitions such as the Foreign Direct Investment Moot and the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition.
All these changes were implemented with a goal to revitalize the Institute of Law and continue its long tradition of excellence in the legal profession.
