PGY1 Program Overview
Core Rotations
Required core learning experiences are four to six weeks and include the following:
Orientation
General Pediatrics
Pediatric Intensive Care
Neonatal Intensive Care
Hematology/Oncology
Specialty Pharmacy
Medication Safety
Required longitudinal learning experiences:
Pharmacy Practice (Staffing)
Project Management
Pharmacy Administration
Clinical Practice Advancement
Teaching Certificate Program
Elective Rotations
Completion of Orientation and the required core rotations will allow the resident to choose up to three elective rotations. The resident may choose to do more than one rotation in a given practice area; however, the rotation must provide a different learning experience or patient population. The resident is encouraged to select elective rotations to provide a breadth of experience; therefore, a maximum of two rotations will be allowed within a specific patient population.
Elective learning experiences are four weeks in duration and include the following:
Pharmacy Informatics
Adult Medicine
Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care
Emergency Medicine
Managed Care
Pharmacy Education
Additional Acute Care Rotation
Pharmacy Practice
Pharmacy practice staffing begins after Orientation and is completed in June. Residents will work two eight-hour shifts every other weekend. Weekend pharmacy practice experience requirements do not entitle the resident to any additional time off during the week. In addition, each resident will be required to staff two holidays.
Clinical Practice Advancement
This learning experience will give the resident practical knowledge in the application of medical literature combined with clinical judgment. Residents will participate in the following activities throughout the residency:
Preparation of a formulary monograph and/or drug class review development and presentation to Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and other committees as applicable.
Review and/or development of policies, procedures or orders sets to improve patient outcomes and patient safety.
Completion of a Medication Utilization Evaluation (MUE) for poster presentation at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Meeting.
Publication of clinical pharmacy department newsletters.
Presentation of clinical education to a variety of audiences
