Leave a Gift in Your Will
Each year we are kindly remembered by music lovers who leave a gift for the RNCM in their will. These ensure that a lasting, often transformative, legacy is left.
Most donors choose to leave a gift offering unrestricted support, so it may be used by the RNCM in an area of greatest need at the time it is received.
Recent generous bequests to the RNCM have made a huge impact in many ways;
RNCM Students
– supporting our students through scholarships, bursaries, hardship funding and more
RNCM Teachers
– ensuring we can attract the world’s best music professors so our staff drive RNCM student’s excellence
RNCM Innovate
– our platform for experimentation and discovery, enabling students to push the boundaries of traditional music practices and drive the industry of tomorrow
RNCM Engage
– RNCM’s work with children and young people to drive music education at the earliest age
Legacy stories
Helen Rachael Mackaness was a graduate of the Royal Manchester College of Music, studying piano and cello. After leaving she enjoyed a successful career as a music teacher.  Following her death, her generous legacy has helped new generations of young musicians to fulfil their own artistic ambitions.  Over the years, more than 40 talented students at the RNCM have received Helen Mackaness Awards, many of whom have since established leading international careers, such as Alexander Panfilov, multiple award-winning concert pianist and RNCM Honorary Associate Artist.
Helen’s legacy is currently supporting 4 postgraduate international pianists and 6 outstanding young musicians at the Junior RNCM. Without support from her legacy they would, quite simply, be unable to study at the RNCM. Helen’s legacy has made a huge difference to the lives of so many talented young musicians and ensures that life-changing opportunities are made possible every single day.

Without a doubt, knowing there are people supporting and rooting for me has made all the difference, last year I received a first with very high distinction. If you are considering leaving a musical instrument to the RNCM in your will, we kindly ask that you get in touch with us in the first instance. While we deeply appreciate such thoughtful gestures, we are not always able to accept instruments in the future due to space constraints, need, and the quality standards required for student use. Whilst we recognise this is a personal decision which you might not wish to share, we would love to have the opportunity to thank you properly, to showcase the impact support has on the RNCM during your lifetime, and to ensure we can accommodate the wishes of your gift.
The RNCM Legacy Club recognises the support of those that have pledged a gift in their Will to the RNCM. It celebrates the significant impact that legacies have on the RNCM, and enables us to bring you closer to the work happening across College during your lifetime. You will receive updates on College activity throughout the year and invitations to events, including an annual event exclusively for the RNCM Legacy Club. Our most recent event was an afternoon of tea and cake, a special recital from students supported by legacies from across our schools of study, and a chance to hear directly from our Principal and students.
