Greetings
President NAKAMURA Yusuke
By walking alongside patients to strengthen collaborating
among industry, government, and academia, we aim to accelerate research that contributes to society.
The National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation,Health and Nutrition (NIBN) has been actively engagedin research and development, aiming to transformincurable diseases into curable ones and to realize asociety where people live long and healthy lives.
In 2025 , the post-war baby boomer generationhas reached the advanced age group, ushering ina super-aged society. As a result, the importance ofliving long and healthy lives has become increasinglysignificant. Amid this, our second 7-years med- to longtermplan started in 2022 , tackling various challengesin anticipation of the "era of 100 -year lifespans".Maintaining and improving health through diet andexercise also requires approaches tailored to eachindividual. Furthermore, in the event of illness, selectingand providing optimal medical care personalized to eachperson will be essential in the coming era. We aim tofurther advance drug discovery and nutritional scienceby leveraging cutting-edge AI analysis and generativeAI technologies, ultimately contributing to society.
In recent years, we have been building a platformthat supports drug discovery by comprehensivelycollaborating with the Osaka International CancerInstitute, while also utilizing generative AI to reduce theburden on healthcare professionals and enable realtime,real-world medical data collection and databasedevelopment. Building on these foundations, we areworking together as one with patients and medicalinstitutions to transform diseases that are currentlyincurable into ones that can be treated.
As a national research institute guided by the threekey domains of biomedical innovation, health, andnutrition, we are committed to addressing challengingareas such as rare and intractable diseases, where private enterprises may struggle to engage.Furthermore, to fully leverage the complementarystrengths of the two institutes – from health maintenanceto pharmaceutical development – we are placing greateremphasis on the integrated fields that bridge medicinewith health and nutrition. In the interdisciplinary domain,we are exploring new possibilities, including research onnutrition, gut microbiota, and immune-related functions.
Moving forward, we will continue our dedicated effortsto develop foundational technologies for innovative drugdiscovery and to conduct research on food, nutrition, and exercise. Through these initiatives, we aspire tocontribute to extending healthy lifespans and strive tobecome a leading research institute at the forefront of avibrant and thriving Japan. To bring hope to patients andto Japan as a whole, we would greatly appreciate yourcontinued - and even greater - support and cooperation.
