Preamble:
Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language. It belongs to the Indo-European family of languages and is spoken in the Konkan coast of India. This region comprises the Konkan division of Maharashtra, Goa, Canara, i.e. coastal Karnataka, and a few pockets in Kerala. Depending upon the region, the language has a different dialect, pronunciation style, vocabulary, tone and significant differences in grammar. Konkani is the official language in the Indian state of Goa and is one of the official languages of India. Despite a 5000 year old heritage, encompassing a rich cultural variety perhaps unmatched in diversity in proportion to its population, the Konkani language sadly continues to suffer neglect and faces the threat of extinction. In this context, during the year 2014-15 Government of Karnataka has released a grant of Rs 2 Crore for the establishment of Konkani Adhyayana Peetha in Mangalore University to promote the interest of Konkani language, culture and heritage.
