Understanding a Stroke
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or a blood vessel within the brain bursts, resulting in damage to the affected brain tissue.
Symptoms of a stroke may include:
Dizziness or difficulty balancing
Vision changes, including double vision or loss of vison on one side
Facial droop or an uneven smile
Sudden numbness, tingling or weakness in the face, arm or leg on one side
Difficultly speaking or understanding speech
Sudden, unexplained headache
The acronym
BE FAST
may help you remember stroke signs and symptoms. If you or someone you know is experiencing new stroke symptoms, call 911 immediately. Emergency response teams are equipped to quickly provide potential stroke patients the care they need. The quicker a stroke patient receives treatment, the better their chance of recovering from the event will be.
Additional Support
Stroke survivors, along with their families and caregivers, are invited to join the Methodist Stroke Support Group, which is designed to provide stroke education, encouragement, hope and understanding. This group is open to all survivors and their loved ones regardless of where care is received.
