Discover Through Research and Real-World Experience
At the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE), undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in research that advances engineering knowledge and addresses real-world challenges. Through faculty mentorship, collaborative projects, and specialized programs, students gain hands-on experience that strengthens technical skills and prepares them for careers in industry, research, and graduate study.
Ways to Get Involved in Research
BCOE provides multiple pathways for undergraduate students to explore research opportunities and develop valuable engineering skills.
Faculty-Led Research
Students can work directly with faculty members conducting research in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, environmental engineering, and bioengineering.

Undergraduate Research Programs
BCOE offers several programs designed to support students who want to begin or deepen their research experience.
BURST Program
Building Undergraduate Research Skills and Talent
The BURST Program supports undergraduate researchers by providing training, networking opportunities, and guidance on professional research practices. Students receive assistance identifying research labs, connecting with faculty mentors, and developing foundational research skills. Participants also receive guidance on presenting research at conferences and symposiums while building a stronger research portfolio.

Summer Bridge to Research
Summer Bridge helps incoming transfer students begin research early in their time at UC Riverside.
Participants complete
10 weeks of full-time research
, while also participating in workshops, training, and networking opportunities.
Program highlights include:
mentorship from faculty and graduate students
research training and professional development
opportunities to build academic and professional networks
a
$5,000 stipend
Applications typically open
January 1 and close May 15
each year.
Summer Collaboration with RISE
BCOE collaborates with the
RISE program in the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences (CNAS)
to offer additional professional development workshops and programming for undergraduate researchers.
These programs help students build research skills while connecting with peers across STEM disciplines.

R’STEM Engagement
BCOE collaborates with the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) to host R’STEM events that bring STEM students together to explore research opportunities and build community.
Events include research resource fairs, research matching events, and interdisciplinary STEM activities that connect students across colleges.
Examples include the CNAS Resource Fair in the fall, the Find Your Research Match event in winter, and the BCOE vs. CNAS Trivia Night in the spring.
50%+ of BCOE Students Participate in Research
More than half of BCOE undergraduate students conduct research in faculty laboratories during their time at UC Riverside.
Through hands-on projects, students collaborate with faculty, graduate researchers, and peers to develop innovative solutions in fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, environmental engineering, and bioengineering.
These experiences strengthen critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills that are essential for success in engineering careers.
"Between the student organizations, lab research, and internships, I had a job secured before I even graduated."
- Sirina, B.S. Electrical Engineering, 2017
Industry Experience
In addition to research opportunities, BCOE students gain valuable professional experience through internships and cooperative education programs.
Internships
Many BCOE students complete internships with local, national, and international companies during summer and winter breaks.
Internships allow students to apply classroom knowledge to professional engineering environments while building industry connections and gaining practical experience.
The UCR Career Center connects students with internship opportunities through career fairs, employer partnerships, and recruitment events.
LEARN MORE
Cooperative Education (Co-Op) Programs
Co-op programs allow students to extend internship experiences while earning academic credit.
These longer-term placements provide deeper industry exposure and allow students to work full-time with partner organizations while continuing their academic progress.
Many co-op experiences lead to full-time job offers after graduation.
