Dear Lourdes Students,
As you know, on February 11, 2026, Lourdes University announced that it will be ceasing academic instruction after the end of the 2026 Summer Session, on or around August 7, 2026. Due to the planned closure of the University, we are sharing information regarding the U.S. Department of Education’s closed school loan discharge process.
You may be eligible for discharge of your federal student loans if you were enrolled at the time the University closes or you withdrew within a certain period before the closure.
For students with loans first disbursed before July 1, 2020, the period is 120 days before closure. For students with loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2020, the period is 180 days before closure. Students who graduate or complete their degrees before the closure, withdrew more than 120 or 180 days (as applicable) before the school closure, or complete a comparable program of study are not eligible for a federal student loan discharge.
All eligibility determinations are made by the U.S. Department of Education.
You can find additional information about closed school discharge on the Federal Student Aid website at
https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/closed-school
.
After the University closes, if you wish to apply for a federal student loan discharge, you will need to complete an application and submit it to your loan servicer(s). If you meet the eligibility requirements for a closed school discharge, your loan holder will automatically send you an application. You can also contact your loan servicer(s) directly for assistance in obtaining an application.
Applications should not be filed before the University closes after the 2026 Summer Session.
