Things to do Over the Summer
The summer before your first term of fall classes can be stressful. Here is a list of things you can plan on doing before arriving at Knox!
Plan Your Class Schedule
Before you can select which courses you want to take during your first term, you’ll need to meet with your academic advisor. And before you can do that, you’ll need to attend a
Smart Start
information session. We’ll walk you through completing your course interest forms and help you schedule a one-on-one meeting with your advisor to schedule classes.
Apply for On-Campus Housing
Shortly after you submit your enrollment deposit, you’ll receive a housing application. We’ll use this information to help match you with a roommate and find the right residence hall for you.
Meet Your Classmates (Online)
Join the
Class of 2029 Instagram
and introduce yourself! We’ll share news and reminders about upcoming events as well.
Finish Your Summer Reading
Your first academic assignment is our
Common Summer Reading
. (Look for your book in July.) Everyone reads it; everyone has to complete a writing assignment related to the text before New Student Orientation.
Start Packing
Yes, you’ll need to bring your own bedding (pillows, sheets, blankets, duvets, etc.). No, you don’t need to bring a couch. It’s a good idea to coordinate with your roommate to avoid duplication, especially on items like televisions, coffee makers, mini-fridges, and microwaves.

New Student Orientation
If this is your first term at Knox–whether you’re a first-year or transfer student–you’ll need to attend New Student Orientation. You’ll meet faculty, learn how to use the library and the fitness center, find the student health center, and access academic support services like tutoring. By the time everyone else arrives on campus, it’ll feel like you’ve been here forever.
Move-in Highlights
Move-in at Knox College is more than just unloading boxes, it’s a whole event including a welcoming ceremony and PlayFair!
