The Work of Art pursues the trajectory of the exhibition The Nature of the Collection, exhibited last year at the Vargas, which sifts through the philosophical contexts evoked by the pieces in the collection. The Work of Art gathers art works from various artists that are centered on labor–be it in public or private, domestic or social, personal or historical, thus bringing to light conditions of making and doing. It also attends to the iconography of work and how it translates into the moment of art, from seemingly banal scenes of washing and mothering, to the picturesque rendering of tilling and fishing, and on to the handiwork itself.

“Transpersonal, instructions” opens at the UP Vargas Museum on 14 December 2018, Friday at 6pm. Transpersonal activities invite participants to experiment with the boundaries between accepted notions of authorship and audience expectation—to play with the performativity of their roles and rethink the various modes of attention they are setting up. The “instructions” weave together a transpersonal, primary initiative of cultural and transnational exchange, that repeatedly encounter a restless ecology of contemporary art. Transpersonal, instructions looks with particular, collaborative attention, at non-Western difference and under–represented geographies in art like the communities working in the Philippines today.

Through painting, photography, and illustration, the daily life of Filipinos inhabiting the northernmost island of the country is portrayed and annotated in this exhibition. According to Datar, the Ivatan culture is shaped by strong typhoons, rough seas, and meager resources. He explains that it exemplifies a particular relationship of a people with their environment. As depicted in Datar’s and Gonzales’s works, the exceptionally beautiful terrain of the province is accented by equally beautiful and highly industrious people. Datar further states that each household is oftentimes self-sufficient, enjoying a considerable degree of independence; and that the beauty of the province lies in its relative isolation and the uniqueness of its culture.
