General surgery
General surgery is a surgical specialty providing expertise in a variety of areas most commonly relating to the abdominal organs including the upper and lower (colorectal) gastrointestinal system.
The most common procedures our general surgeons provide include planned operations such as repair of uncomplicated hernias and removal of a diseased gallbladder. They may also provide emergency procedures such as removing your appendix, draining abscesses or more complex issues such as strangulation or perforation of organs.
Many of our general surgeons are able to provide more complex surgery, such as removing tumours and growths, and have completed sub-specialty training in areas such as endocrine, breast and bariatric surgery.
Some people may find the prospect of having surgery daunting, especially if it is the first time they are undergoing surgery. Our experienced surgeons and nurses explain the process to help you mentally and physically prepare. After surgery, we work closely with you as you recover to help you return to a pain free life.
Our general surgery services
General surgeons work in a multidisciplinary environment with medical specialists including general and sub-specialty physicians and surgeons in other fields.
If clinically appropriate and technically feasible our surgeons use the latest laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) techniques to make your procedure minimally invasive.
Day surgery
Day surgery is a minor surgery or procedure which can be performed safely and effectively and yet still allow you to enter and leave hospital on the same day.
It can minimise disruption to your life and allow you to recover at home. Your treating surgeon or physician will let you know whether day surgery is the right option for you.
Benefits of our general surgery service
Our general surgery services can assist and benefit you in a number of ways:
expert care provided by a multidisciplinary team
the option to undergo some procedures as day surgery
the highest levels of care, including post-operative care, from our team of qualified caregivers.
